IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William H.
Schwanekamp
December 14, 1937 – August 17, 2023
William H. Schwanekamp, affectionately known as Bill to family and friends, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2023, in Cincinnati, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 14, 1937, in Auburn, New York, Bill's life was characterized by his unwavering commitment to his faith, his family and community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ann Schwanekamp; Children Julie Schwanekamp, Michael (Robin) Schwanekamp, Lisa Hotchkiss, Lori (John) Heitz and Steve (Michelle) Schwanekamp; 11 grandchildren, Sara, Nella, Andrew, Matthew, Annalise, Jack, Sam, Will, Adam, Max, and Cackie; and brother Herbert (Lynda) Schwanekamp. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Wilson and brother Robert Schwanekamp.
Bill received his education at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1963. His dedication to service led him to a fulfilling career for the United Way, a career he held with distinction for 30 years in Cincinnati, and as Executice Director in Columbus and Houston, TX. During his career, he taught Fundrasining Principals at The Ohio State University. Upon moving to Scottsdale, AZ in 1993 he was Director of Developemnt and Stewardship for the Archdiocese of Phoenix. His leadership, integrity, and passion for helping others were hallmarks of his tenure, impacting lives and leaving an indelible mark on the organizations he served.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill was an avid Bengals and Reds fan. But his most enjoyment was sitting on the sidelines watching his grandchildren playing soccer, tennis, football, or ice hockey. He also loved the arts, particularly the performance of his grandchildren in theater or vocal performances. He himself was known to grace a party singing his favorite, 'Mack the Knife.'
Bill's faith played a significant role in his life. He was a devoted member of St. Columban Catholic Church, where he served as Director of the Stewardship Committee and as a Eucharist Minister. He also served as President of the Serra Club and was honored to be a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. His faith was not merely a belief but a way of life that guided his actions and decisions. His active participation in the church served as a testament to his commitment to his faith and his desire to serve others. Bill was a man of few words, but when he spoke people listened.
In remembering Bill, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by a passion for service, a commitment to family and community, and a spirit of generosity that touched countless lives. His memory will continue to inspire and guide all who were fortunate to know him. Even in his absence, his legacy of faith and family will remind us of the remarkable man that was William H. Schwanekamp.
