Obituary

Wayne Holderness Martin, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on June 26, 2026. Wayne was born on March 15, 1931, in Manchester, Ohio, to Leonard Douglas Martin and Martha Lucille Holderness Martin.

On September 12, 1954, Wayne married the love of his life, Ruth Anne Streifthau, in Middletown, Ohio. Together they built a beautiful home centered on faith, family, hard work, and service. Their family was sealed for time and all eternity on July 2, 1965, in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

During their married life, Wayne and Anne lived in Columbus, Ohio; Wilmington, Delaware; Parkersburg, West Virginia; Fairfield, Ohio; and Loveland, Ohio. Wherever they lived, they built lasting friendships and strengthened the communities around them through their kindness, service, and example.

Wayne's love of Scouting began in his youth. He was the first Eagle Scout in Clermont County, Ohio. He served as a Scout leader in many capacities over the years.

Wayne earned his bachelor’s and PhD degrees in chemistry from the Ohio State University. He spent his 36-year professional career at DuPont, beginning as a polymer chemist.

Wayne enjoyed the outdoors and found joy in Scouting, canoeing, camping with his family, and biking on his favorite trails in Loveland and in Utah County. He loved Ohio State football and enjoyed cheering on the Buckeyes.

He loved serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His service included Scoutmaster, Cub Scout pack leader, branch president, temple worker, and in stake and mission presidencies. In every calling he went above and beyond, serving with the utmost dedication.

In the community he served on the school board in Delaware, volunteered at elementary schools to help students learn to read, volunteered as a AARP tax preparer, and was involved in the United Way.

Wayne was Mr. Fix It, spending countless hours on projects at his and his children’s homes including installing shelves, painting, home repairs, and repairing flat bike tires. He even built the family ping pong table. He loved gathering his family for reunions, and is no doubt enjoying a reunion in heaven.

He is preceded in death by his siblings John Martin, Sue Bragiel, and Wesley Martin; son-in-law Scott Schafer and grandson Brent Schafer. He is survived by his brother Jerry (Norma) Martin; his 7 children: Jayne Schafer, Mary (David) Rollins, Mark (Lynne) Martin, Michael (Angie) Martin, Barbara (James) Pack, Aaron (Emily) Martin, and Suzanne (Tyler) Rogers; 37 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.

Funeral services for Wayne will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 8250 Cornell Road, Cincinnati, Ohio. Viewing will be on Friday, July 17 from 7-8 PM at Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home, 129 N Riverside Dr., Loveland, OH. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Wayne's life.
