Tribute to a Big Brother Good evening to all, and God Bless everyone. I am Mick's "Little" brother John, and from the bottom of my heart I thank everyone for coming here to celebrate the life of a "Saint-Like" man that I am so very humbled to call My Big Brother: Walter Mitchell Mickey Mick Herrmann Jr. Please forgive me for having to read this, as I fear that I would not be able to finish telling my story without having my thoughts written down. I would like to give you the "Reader's Digest" version of my memories of Brother Mick. Mick is the eldest of 4 brothers; Mick (Mick Had A "Sister" Aunt JoAnn), Dennis, myself, and Bill, born to Wally and Ruth Herrmann. Aunt JoAnn was our mother's youngest sister and always took care of Mick like her little "brother". My first memory of Mick is when me, being 6 years old, and my brother Bill were playing in the front yard of Grandpa and Grandma Kramer's home on Drakewood Dr. in Oakley. Our next older brother, Dennis was riding his bicycle on the street when this blonde headed boy, about 16 years old, caught up with and then ran past Dennis. I asked our mother, "Who is that boy?" Granny, as she was later known as, told me that the boy was my brother Mickey. I remember asking, "We have a brother Mickey?" Then I remembered that I HAD seen him around the house at times, probably trying to get something to eat before his younger brothers ate it all. My initial thought was that he was the fastest runner that I had ever seen. Mom told Bill and me that Mickey could run like the wind as well as sing like a bird in the Withrow High School Choir, played the French horn in the school band and played baseball. Little did I realize then just how lucky I was to have a BIG brother like Mick. In retrospect, I am sure that I knew that he was my brother, but with Mick being 10 years older than me, he probably didn't have time to play with me. I asked mom to "make" Mick play with his younger brothers, which I really know that he did, as-well-as protected us. I was told that Mick was graduating from High School soon and would be enlisting in the Navy. I wondered what that meant and mom told me that my big brother was going to serve his country and protect us from bad people. For the next 21 years, as I got older, married, had 2 sons, John and Mark, and I would ask mom and dad if they had heard from Mick and when he would be coming to see us. They would say as soon as he gets transferred from wherever he was stationed: Hawaii, Turkey, Guam, etc. etc. etc. to nearby. Finally the day came when Senior Chief Petty Officer Walter Mitchell Herrmann Jr. decided to retire from the Navy. Even though I was about 28 years old by then, I was excited that I could FINALLY have a close relationship with my "long- lost brother". NOPE!!! The Lord had called Mick and he was now joining the Salvation Army, where he studied and became a Minister. He came and left again but only to make me prouder to call him my brother and even more of a HERO to me. He traveled all over again, this time spreading God's Word and helping people; Living in Hawaii, (do you see a pattern here?), California, Arizona, etc. etc. etc. As the years passed, I was getting older, Mick wasn't and I started losing my hair, and MICK didn't. Mick retired from the Salvation Army, and married an Angel sent from Heaven, my Dear Sister Maurine. I give complete credit to Maurine and my wonderful wife Ann for making me finally start and build a deep, close relationship with my brother Mick. Too many years had passed by, but eventually it was well worth the wait. If I seem to sound a little greedy and jealous, maybe I was in my younger years. Many people throughout their lives may meet ONE person, on this Earth, that will influence and possibly set as to goal to be like. I was lucky enough to have my HERO in the same home with me. The jealousy may have come from sharing Mick with his wonderful children: Kelly, Kurt, Debbie, Robin, Sheri, and Mitchell, and do not forget The Navy and The Salvation Army. I know that God has forgiven me for these feelings. All the way up to my brother's final breath here on earth, Mick only wanted to serve The Lord and help everyone that he could. Proof to me is that now my younger brother Bill and I have reconnected, promising to never drift apart again. Thank you to a TRUE HERO, my Big Brother Mick; I will always love you.
