IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley Anne
Matre
May 10, 1935 – February 1, 2024
Shirley Anne Matre of Loveland. Beloved wife of the late Jack Matre. Loving mother of Mark Matre and Amy (Tom) Siekman. Proud grandmother of Aric (Sarah) Galloso, Julie (Chris) Chancey, and Ross (Allegra) Siekman. Cherished great grandmother of AJ & Owen Galloso and Jack & Hudson Chancey. Devoted daughter of the late Anthony (Mabel) Hardin and the late Marion Browning. Dear half sister of the late Terry Hardin and his wife, Carol. Passed away February 1, 2024 at the age of 88.
Shirley Anne Hardin grew up in the family home in Silverton. Herr father Tony was an excellent athlete, so she was constantly at many sporting events. It was at one of his many baseball games that she met her future husband, Jack Matre. On November 3, 1956 Shirley and Jack were married and started growing their family shortly thereafter.
Sports were a big part of her life and she was always involved with coaching, fundraising and helping in whatever way that was needed. In addition, the family loved to camp and travel which allowed them to visit all fifty states along with numerous international destinations. One of the most memorable and challenging trips was their drive from Loveland, to Anchorage Alaska in 1978 with the family dog Lady. This drive to Alaska took seven days (with many of them being sixteen hours a days) on the then unpaved Alaska Canada highway. Needless to say, they encountered many flat tires and other unique challenges along the way. This proved to be worth it as they spent several weeks seeing much of the state with their son Mark, who was serving in the Air Force.
After the sudden loss of her husband prior to Shirley turning 50, her neighbors, lifelong friends and a growing extended family helped her through this most difficult time.. She especially loved getting together with a group of high school friends who remained close throughout her life. In addition, she had friends from the many years of bowling at Seymour Lanes, playing cards and golfing. She also enjoyed going on camping trips with her dear friends the Schoettle's and playing softball with her daughter Amy on a Loveland Women's League. Family vacations brought her joy as she was able to spend time with her kids and grandchildren (Florida and Cincinnati).
Shirley worked in the guidance office at Loveland High School for over twenty years and was the high school girls softball coach. After retiring, she volunteered at Bethesda North Hospital and was a very active member at Sycamore Presbyterian Church, where she was in charge of Greeter's along with her best friend from seventh grade, Carol Warman.
She lived in the same house in Loveland for over 50 years until she moved to The Lodge in 2021, Her family is very thankful for all the love, support and memories from neighbors, family and friends over her 88 years of life.
Family and friends will be received from 10:30-11:15 AM on Friday, February 9 at Sycamore Presbyterian Church, 11800 Mason Road, Cincinnati, OH 45249, where services will be held at 11:15 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Shirley may be directed to HEARTT Animal Refuge , 11354 Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH 45241 or Sycamore Presbyterian Church , 11800 Mason Road, Cincinnati, OH 45249.
