IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley
Hogan
December 4, 1932 – January 31, 2026
Shirley Nelson Hogan of Loveland passed away at home on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at the age of 93. Beloved wife of the late Michael C. Hogan, Sr. she was surrounded by the ones who loved her most; her seven children, their spouses, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. There is no other way she would have wanted to move from this world and into the loving arms of Jesus than to be surrounded by her kids and their families.
In her final hours she was prayed over and honored in the most somber but beautiful ways. And there is no doubt our equally beloved dad was there to meet her, take her hand and welcome her to eternal rest. What a grand and glorious reunion they had.
Loving mother of Kathleen Hogan, Michael C. (Lori) Hogan, Jr., David (Nancy) Hogan, Patricia (Stephen) McCue, Kenneth (Heather) Hogan, Colleen (David) Dunavin, and Christopher (Jessica) Hogan. Cherished grandmother of James (Lauren) Wallace, Brian Hogan, Tara Hogan, Traci (Jeff) Hail, Michael (Katie) Morgan, Katelyn (Nick) Jarman, Kyle (Mei) Hogan, Sean Hogan, Patrick (Katie Elizabeth) McCue, Katherine (Shay) Nartker, Mackenzie (Corey) Hughes, Peyton Hogan (Rachel Catron), Kennedy Hogan, Bailey Dunavin (Christopher Dearborn), Rylie Dunavin, Donovan Hogan, and Sydney Hogan. Proud great grandmother of Willow Wallace, Brooke Hogan, Bradley Childs, Colton Hail, Benton Hail, Alston Hail, Addison Hail, Roman Morgan, Fionn McCue and Fia McCue.
Preceded in death by her parents, Cornelius and Alma Nelson as well as her 8 siblings and their spouses; Cornelius (Catherine) Nelson, James (Celie) Nelson, John Nelson, Edward (Joy) Nelson, Marion (Leo) Sanders, Alma (Joe) McLaughlin, Rose (Harry) Williams and Delores Nelson.
Born and raised in the Irish Channel of New Orleans, the daughter of a New Orleans Police Officer and a homemaker and the sister to 8 siblings, it is there where she learned to work hard, live simply and love family.
She met her one true love, our dad, when she was 13 years old at a school dance where his orchestra was playing. In our dad's words "When I spotted her on the dance floor, I said I'm hooked, that's the one." He was exactly right! They married on June 2, 1951, in a sweet and modest ceremony at St. Michael Catholic Church, she was 18 and our dad 19. Together they raised a family, formed a legacy, and lived out their vows. My mom never stopped loving and missing our dad. "One Life. One Love" was inscribed on their wedding bands, and that was them.
Our mother was our center, our constant and an endless source of strength, love, and inspiration. She taught us the most important lessons, to have faith in Him, to work hard, to be a good person and the honor of loving your family. And the most incredible part is because of her immense humility she didn't realize what a force she was to all of us. We are all better people because of her.
Our mom's love and inspiration went far beyond just her immediate family. She was "Aunt Shirl" to so many nieces and nephews spanning several generations, most of whom are still firmly rooted in her birthplace, New Orleans.
If you were lucky enough to have known her, worked alongside her or just be in her presence you too felt all what we felt. With the sweetest greetings of "Hi, my baby" or "Hi, my darlin'" or just her beautiful, warm, smile, you too were blessed by her.
"Shaggs" enjoyed working in her yard, taking care of her gardens and riding her John Deere mower (aka Shirley Deere as our dad called it). Cooking for her family always brought her much joy, and she could cook! But at the top of the list, just under her love for her family, was her love and devotion to the New Orleans Saints. A proud member of The Who Dat Nation, our Girl Shirl loved her football.
A longtime resident of Loveland, she lived out her final days in the loving care of the nurses and staff at Magnolia Springs Assisted Living. A recent patient of Hospice Care of Cincinnati and EIG Senior Advocates, her care was handled with grace, dignity and compassion. There are nearly not enough words for the immeasurable amount of gratitude we have as her children for how everyone cared for and loved our mom. The friendships forged with the residents were so special and we gained great comfort knowing they loved her too.
St. Columban Catholic Church in Loveland has been our parent's home for nearly 60 years, and it is there they formed friendships with their priests and fellow parishioners. But their most cherished relationship was with Fr. Larry Tensi, an incredible friend and mentor to them both. St. Columban is the place where they lived out their Catholic faith, raised their children and now will both have received their last sacrament.
Family and friends will be received from 6-8 PM on Thursday, February 5 at Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home, 129 N Riverside Ave, Loveland, OH 45140. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 6 at St. Columban Catholic Church, 894 Oakland Rd, Loveland, OH 45140. Interment Graceland Memorial Gardens.
