Obituary

Ruth Eleanor (Bolender) Butts, was born Saturday, September 6, 1930 to Herbert and Anna Gertrude (Shinkle) Bolender in Clermont County, Ohio, the 2nd of three children. She passed from this life on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at the age of 91 and 313 days in Milford, Ohio at 4:53pm. She had only 52 days until her 92nd birthday. Her parents predeceased her as well as her brother, Kenneth Eugene Bolender and her sister, Marcella Faye (Bolender) Young. She grew up a farm girl and, from a very young age, had to care for her mother who was ill. She graduated Higginsport High School in 1948 top in her class. She was raised during the Depression years under difficult conditions, so she was always conservative in the way she handled the way she shopped, and used her supplies at home. She is survived by her husband of over 70.75 years, William R. Butts. From the day she met her soon-to-be husband to their wedding day, it was exactly 11 weeks. They had three children: twins Larry (Eileen) Butts and Linda (Butts) (Marvin) Miller, then Jennifer (Butts) (Dennis) Eaton nearly five years later. She had six grandchildren (three boys and three girls) and 10 great-grandchildren (six boys and four girls). It was so special that she was able to hold her tenth great-grandchild in July 2021. She loved holding babies. She was baptized into the Christian Faith in 1948 in the Ohio River at Higginsport by Reggie Thomas. She has attended Churches of Christ ever since. Ruth was a dedicated Bible reader and believer and not one person seemed to get upset or mad with her sweet ways. Ruth loved the Church and worked alongside her husband for all her married life. She and her husband raised three children to be baptized, and loving individuals. Ruth loved fresh vegetables, especially green beans. She loved gardening. Every year, she canned a lot of green beans, peaches, pears and she made and canned tomato juice. She made her own sweet pickles to eat and to add to certain dishes. She froze corn on and off the cob and lima beans. She also froze small amounts of cooked vegetables and when she thought she had enough, she made her famous vegetable soup. She also made really good chili. Her husband enjoyed her cooking, and her kids were spoiled with her country type cooking. She was a good baker as time permitted too. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, she always made her famous pumpkin pies. At Christmas, she always made her own chocolate fudge, candied cherry cookies, and coconut cookies. Everyone loved her meals; she was excellent in managing so all the dishes were ready at the same time. Ruth loved flowers, especially African Violets. She grew and gently cared for them by the hundreds. If a leaf fell off one, she made sure to use it to start a new one from that single leaf. The last weeks of her life, she enjoyed flowers via pictures shown to her. She asked about her petunias, so pictures were taken and shown to her. She never appeared to be a traveler. However, in her retirement years, she traveled with her husband to Alaska, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Hawaii, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Switzerland, Wales, and the transcontinental country of Turkey which is a part of Europe and Asia. Specifically, she went with her husband to Eskisehir, capital of Eskisehir Province in Central Antola. They went on three cruises and traveled many times to California to visit their youngest daughter and her family. She enjoyed her travels to different states and cities with Bill during his working career and after his retirement. She and Bill were always so blessed to be together. Ruth always said she did more in her lifetime that she ever thought she actually would. She wanted to go to California again to visit her youngest daughter, Jennifer, and her family, but her health would not allow it. So, Jennifer made a trip here to surprise Ruth. They had such a good time reminiscing about life's happenings. She maintained her sense of humor and quick wit all of her life, even during the last weeks of her life. Ruth has an extremely good memory, could recall the many extended family members' birth dates and anniversary dates, as well as members of her own family. She could type over 100 words per minute. She was good at English and typing. Ruth made the transitions from a manual typewriter to an electric typewriter, then to computers. She did some secretarial work for an outplacement company for a few years. She helped Bill many, many nights with his reports for work during his career. Ruth was Bill's secretary during his 10 consulting years. She was always so supportive of Bill and was almost always right… well, always right. Ruth decided because she was older, she wanted to die first and she wanted Bill to take care of her during her decline…another decision she was right about.
