Obituary

RICHARD GLENN ROHRER Dr. Richard G. Rohrer died Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the age of 80 from a stroke. He was in his second year of remission from acute myelogenous leukemia and was valiantly battling a related but rare blood disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome. Dr. Rohrer was born November 11, 1929 in North Canton, Ohio to Bessie Mohler Rohrer and Clarence Jay Rohrer, owners of the local Mohler Lumber Company. He described his youth in North Canton as like living in Norman Rockwell's paintings of small town life. Dr. Rohrer graduated from North Canton High School in 1947 and then attained his B.S. degree from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio in 1951. He went on to attend the Ohio State University College of Medicine and graduated from there in 1955. He completed his residency in anesthesia at University Hospital in Columbus. Dr. Rohrer served his country as a lieutenant in the United States Navy while stationed as an anesthesiologist at the U. S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. He completed two years of active military duty in 1959 and continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until 1968. Following his discharge from active duty, Dr. Rohrer embarked on what would become his life's career as an anesthesiologist. He first worked for one year in Chicago, Illinois and then for several more at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. In the summer of 1964 he relocated his family to Cincinnati, Ohio where he practiced anesthesiology at Bethesda Hospital for the remainder of his career. He was well regarded in the Cincinnati medical community. Upon his retirement, Dr. Rohrer moved to a 150 acre farm in Warren County, Ohio which was his pride and joy. He loved caring for his beautiful property, whether mowing the fields, repairing and painting fences, doing carpentry projects, chopping firewood, or tending his garden. He relished taking long walks in the woods with his dogs and delighted in searching for and discovering things such as fossils, arrowheads, morel mushrooms, and paw paws. Dr. Rohrer was an avid lover of animals and adopted countless strays over his lifetime. As recently as 2009 he was caring for five cats, two dogs, two goats, and a pony. An extremely private man, Dr. Rohrer valued solitude and independence. He had a keen mind and a dry wit. Quiet by nature, he nonetheless cast a formidable impression on the lives of those he touched. Dr. Rohrer is pre-deceased by his parents and a sister, Helen Rohrer Leed of North Canton, Ohio. He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Rohrer Hamilton (John and granddaughter Sarah Marie Hamilton) of Atlanta, Georgia, a son Jed Alan Rohrer (Rebecca McHugh and grandson Jed Alan Rohrer Jr.) of Loveland, Ohio and another son James Richard Rohrer (Pamela Sharp and their daughters Melissa, Amanda, and Michelle and their families) of Fairfield Township, Ohio as well as his former wife and the mother of his three children, Jacqueline Logan of Middletown, Ohio. A sister, Theda Rohrer Donovan of Sarasota, Florida and a brother, Max Rohrer of Naples, Florida also survive him. Many nieces and nephews mourn his passing, most notably Garry Leed (Jeanne) and William Leed (Peggy) of North Canton, Ohio with whom he shared the continued family ownership of the Mohler Lumber Company, along with their sisters Marcia Leed Grant of Santa Rosa, California and Laurie Leed Gwynne of Wellington, Florida. Dr. Rohrer's family shares their grief with many friends, notably Joe Fitzpatrick of Nashville, Tennessee. Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Homes are handling arrangements which will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Circle Tail, Inc., a non-profit organization located in Warren County, Ohio which provides assistance dogs to people with disabilities.
