Our dear, Richard "Dick" passed away on June 2, at the age of 90. He was born on April 6, grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, to Phyillis & August Eckels with his brother Phillip. For 59 years, Dick was married to the love of his life, Laurel. They built their life together, side by side, raising Kathy and Mike.
Dick will be remembered for his sharp mind, gentle kindness, quiet thoughtfulness, and unwavering drive. He spent his life devoted to his wife & family and his many hobbies.
Prior to getting his degree, Dick served in the Army during the Korean war. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
Dick was a Professional Engineer for 35 years. Throughout his life, he was especially passionate about aviation. After 20 or so years of flying with power, he decided to give the non-powered world of gliders a try and has been soaring ever since. Dick took many meaningful missionary flights as volunteer cargo pilot with Agape Flights out of Venice, Florida. He was a crew chief, flight instructor, designated pilot examiner for the Caesar’s Creek Soaring Club.
For over 25 years, Dick and Laurel treasured their time as snowbirds from Ohio to Venice, Florida. They found joy in music, dancing, and beautiful sunsets, toasting with their family and friends.
Dick was a cherished father of Michael Eckels and the late Kathy Nagel. He was a caring father-in-law to Margy Eckels & Steve Nagel. Proud grandfather of Jen (Kip) Kummerle, Ellen Nagel, Thomas (Ashley) Eckels, Laura (Joel) Quill, Stephanie Nagel, Kate (Andrew) Hendrix, and Natalie (Nolan) Losier. Loving great-grandfather of 10 great-grandchildren.
Above all, Dick will be remembered for sharing his love and kindness, touching the lives of many in a profound way.
Family and friends will be received Monday, June 8, 2026, from 10 AM - 11 AM at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 101 S. Lebanon Road, Loveland, OH 45140, where a service for Dick will begin at 11 AM.
Donations in Dick's memory may be directed to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or the Caesar's Creek Soaring Club Youth Camp, 5385 Elbon Rd., Waynesville, OH 45068.
