Obituary

The Rev Glen Hiles passed peacefully into eternal life on Friday October 2nd, 2015 following a prolonged battle with Parkinson's Disease. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Belle Elizabeth (nee Leonard), and his children David (Natalie), Rebecca (John) Costello and Mark (Lisa). Beloved grandfather of Amber (Bob) Wagner, Scott (Rogena), Rachel (Jusiah) Miller and Abigail (David) Cydrus. Cherished great-grandfather of Jacob Wagner & Noah Miller. Step-grandfather to Courtney (Cody) McKay , Mallory Flippo, Jeffrey Worley and step-great-grandfather to Lily and Lucy Chandler. Also survived by half-sister Helen Ann (Frank) Bowen. Preceded in death by 14 siblings and son Jeffrey. Rev Hiles was born in the McCullough community of western Scioto County, OH on March 13th, 1927 to Henry and Matilda (Emmons) Hiles. In September 1941 he dropped out of McDermott High School nine days into his freshman year, opting instead to work with his father in the family timber business cutting cross ties for the railroads. Drafted in March, 1945, Glen was deployed to Germany, where he served in the Allied occupation forces as a cook in the officers' mess. He joined four of his brothers in serving in the armed forces during WWII. After the War, he returned to Scioto County where he met his future wife. Glen & Belle were married on May 6th 1948. That was also Belle's graduation day from McDermott High School. They moved to Dayton, OH where Glen worked for General Motors. The next year they gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in a Baptist Church in Dayton. About that time, Glen found work at the Gem City Ice Cream Company and began taking night classes in order to earn his high school diploma. In 1952 Glen & Belle relocated to Portsmouth, OH where Glen began working for the Ideal Milk Company. Two years later they moved to Lucasville, OH into a small home that they built themselves. In 1955, Glen & Belle joined Blue Run Methodist Church at the behest of the Rev. Julius Chandler who would later become Glen's mentor. The next year Glen was licensed as a local pastor by the West Ohio Conference of the Methodist Church under the supervision of Rev Chandler. After two years as a local pastor, Glen accepted a student appointment to a three-church charge ministering to the Stockdale, Pleasant Hill and Lumen Chapel congregations. He also attended night school at the then Portsmouth Branch of Ohio University. In 1960, Glen was granted his diploma from (McDermott) Northwest High School and then enrolled at Rio Grande College in Rio Grande, OH earning a BS in Elementary Education in 1963 before being appointed to the Gettysburg-Pitsburg charge in Darke Co, OH. That fall he entered United Theological Seminary in Dayton, later transferring to the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, OH. In 1965 he was ordained a Deacon in the Methodist Church, then was transferred to the Pomeroy congregation in Meigs Co, OH in 1967. He was granted his Master of Divinity from METHESCO in 1968 and was also ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church. In 1969 Rev Hiles was appointed pastor of Lucasville, OH Emmanuel UMC and served there for seven years. He also taught Sociology and Abnormal Psychology as an adjunct professor at Shawnee State College. Rev Hiles was appointed pastor of the Frankfort-Austin charge in Ross County, OH in 1976 and served those congregations for nine years. During that time he served as a substitute teacher in the Frankfort Adena Schools. Glen left pastoral ministry in 1985 when he accepted a chaplaincy appointment to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Chillicothe, OH. He served there for nine years. Upon retirement from the West Ohio Conference in 1992 he accepted a part-time retired appointment to the Mt. Carmel-Concord charge in eastern Ross County, serving there for four years. From 1996-1999 Rev Hiles served as an interim preacher at First Presbyterian Church in Reynoldsburg, OH. That was followed by a three-year interim position at the Frankfort Presbyterian Church. Following several years of pulpit fill-in work, Glen concluded his ministerial career as co-pastor of the Pisgah Federated Church in Greenfield, OH from 2004 through 2007. After several years of declining health, Glen & Belle relocated from Frankfort to Cincinnati in 2010 to be closer to their daughter, Becky. Glen spent his final two years at Meadowbrook Care Center in Montgomery. The family wishes to thank the staffs at Meadowbrook and Vistas Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Glen in the twilight of his life. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 6th from 5PM to 7PM at Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home, 129 N. Riverside Drive Loveland, Ohio 45140 and on Thursday, Oct 8th from 5PM to 7:45PM followed by a Masonic service at 8:00 PM at McKinley Funeral Home, 10562 US Hwy 23, Lucasville, OH 45648. Funeral Services will be held 11AM, Friday, October 9th preceded by a one-hour calling time at Emmanuel UMC, 72 Scioto St, Lucasville with burial with military honors will by the William A. Baker Post and James Irwin Post of the American Legion will follow at Rush Town Cemetery in Rush Township, OH. Memorials, if so desired, may be made to Wesley Chapel Mission Center, P.O.
