Ralph Wendall Spangler was born April 20, 1926 in Brecon, Ohio to Charles and Myrtle (Lyon) Spangler. He spent his early childhood in Brecon and later Goshen until entering the Navy at the age of 19. Following his discharge, he made a living hauling coal and gravel, which was to be the beginning of his life behind the wheel hauling milk, grain and even water. He was married for 67 years to Paulene (Applegate) and together they raised 5 children on a small farm in Middleboro, OH in Warren County and later moved to Clinton County. Tragically, they lost 2 sons, David in 1974 and Dennis in 1999. Until his health started to decline he enjoyed fishing, raising a garden and spending time with his family. He took his last breath at 10:10PM on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 surrounded by his family. His parting was peaceful and painless. He is survived by his wife, Paulene, son- Danny (Judy), daughters - Deanna Wiederhold (Edward) and Denise Hinkle (Russell), grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. At the time of his death he had 1 surviving sibling, Mary Keal, 93, who passed away the following day. They are now reunited together with brothers, Frank and William McVey, Clifford (Bus) Spangler and sisters, Martha Daggy, Betty Hoskins, Hope Davis and Emma Sloan. Ralph will receive an Honor Guard burial and will be laid to rest near his sons at Edwardsville Cemetery.
Ralph's family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at The Ohio Veteran's Home in Georgetown, OH where he spent the last 7 months of his life. "Thanks" is not nearly enough and words cannot state what their care and devotion to his needs has meant to us right up the his final farewell when he was rolled out amid several "brothers-in-arms" who left their warm beds to salute his departure under the blanket of our "Stars and Stripes" while Taps echoed through the fog on that damp, cold night. You guys are the best of the best and the reason we are proud to be Americans. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU AND GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - this is what it's all about!
In lieu of flowers, his family wishes you honor our Veterans in his memory.
