Obituary

Phyllis Audrey Allen, 89, of Blanchester, passed away March 23, 2022. She was born July 5, 1932 in Edenton, Ohio to the late Reverend Edward Robert Long and Millie Grace Long (nee Hill). She is survived by: her four sons all of whom she dutifully doted over for 70 years; Timothy Wayne (Anne) of Montgomery, OH, Kenny Dale, of Milford, OH, Chris Robert (Robin) of Bolton Valley, VT, Steven Howard (Vanessa) of Florence, KY. Also survived by Sister-in-law Vernadene Tucker; Grandchildren Alyssa Allen (Diane), Emily Donahue (Dr. Kevin), Benjamin (Khadija), Rachel Long (Justin), Gretchen Bradshaw, and Alfred William Allen; great grandchildren: BJ, Gavin, Finn, Caroline, Miles and Charlotte; many nieces and nephews, and daughters-in-law Ann Allen and Mary Kay Hansen. She attended Edenton schools until high school when she graduated from Blanchester in class of 1950. After 2 early married years of balancing a job outside the home with 2 babies at home, Phyllis transitioned to a lifelong career as executive director of the Allen household. That was a role she she accepted gladly. Her four boys and her husband always had a nourishing meal and clean clothes. She had her work cut out for her. For the first 20 years of that job the household didn't feature indoor plumbing or running water. Furthermore, it wasn't until her sons were grown that they discovered wives don't necessarily comb the husband's hair while he ate his breakfast. Besides gardening and genealogy, Phyllis was a voracious reader of newspapers - big city and small town newspapers. There was rarely a minute her entire adult life when her radio was not on and tuned to one of her favorite stations. These 2 prime sources of information fed her great sense of curiosity as she possessed an avid interest in an eclectic mix of subjects particularly sports, current and historical events and people. I am sure that each of her five boys (including her late husband here) can attribute her inspiration of continuously to learn and make sense of the world to whatever success they may have found in their own lives. She was a great conversationalist and an exceptional person. Phyllis will be missed by those who knew her. May she rest in peace with her beloved Alfred. In addition to her parents and daughter-in-law Jenee Allen she was preceded in death by her husband Alfred of 68 years who she married at age 18 in 1950. Also preceding her in death were older siblings: Wesley, Anna, Andrew, John Sr., Edward, Evelyn and Mildred. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Blanchester Historical Society, Blanchester Senior Center, Ladies American Legion and she rarely missed an annual Blanchester Schools Alumni Banquet meeting. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, March 28 at the Blanchester IOOF Cemetery, Blanchester. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Blanchester Historical Society, 103 E. Center St., Blanchester, OH 45107.
