Obituary

Patricia Ireland May of Montgomery. Beloved wife of the late Robert E. May, Jr. Loving mother of Robert (Julia) May, Krista (Doug) Altemuehle, Daniel (Maya) May, and Robert "Rob" (Patti) Erickson. Cherished "Nana" of Anna May, Maggie (Spencer) Urban, Lily May, Lauren, Lindsay & Drew Altemuehle, Piper, Avery & James May, and Patti Erickson. Dearest cousin of George (RoseMarie) Matusak and Ruth (John) Gholz. Dear sister of Cory Ireland, Tim (Lisa) Ireland, and Maureen (Glenn) Johnston. Also survived by her cousin, Dee Robertson; nieces Maureen Margaret (Paul) Swift and Caryn (Jon) Jenkins; brother-in-law, Michael (Mary Ann) May, as well as many beloved friends.

Passed away December 30, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born in Buffalo, New York to Corydon and Mary Ireland, Patti grew up as sister, caregiver and mentor to her three younger siblings. In 1962 she wed Bob May, with whom she enjoyed over 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2023. She raised her children in a warm and loving environment. The family moved to Montgomery in 1977 where she became very involved in her community.

Patti thrived and inspired others through her volunteerism. She served on the City of Montgomery Landmarks committee to help the city preserve and highlight the historic character of its neighborhoods and structures. She volunteered for years at Washburn Elementary where she read books to children and organized an "adopt a family" effort, thus providing families in need with gifts and essential items during the holidays. She worked tirelessly with children and families at Resurrection School on the West Side and the town of Whitley City through her church group. She also helped found and run the Robert and Patricia May Foundation, helping families become first time home buyers and also sponsoring an adult vocational scholarship program, partnering with the Great Oaks organization. She truly lived a life of giving.

Patti enjoyed a successful career in real estate and co-founded her namesake company, Ireland-May Ltd. in 1996 as a residential builder, remodeler and developer. True to her passion for historic design, her vision guided the firm and led to multiple industry awards and recognition.

She was a long time and active member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She adored her friends in the Good Shepherd community, her beloved "Brunch Bunch" and all the relationships formed through her deep and unwavering faith.

Her most cherished role, however, was as Mom and Nana to her children and grandchildren. A constant at games, recitals and various functions, Nana was always present and always encouraging. She had all the updates on how the grandkids were doing and was so proud of all of them. She gave and received an abundance of love her entire life.
