Norma Virginia Morrison, 96, died peacefully in her sleep on November 29, 2020. She was one of the sweetest people on earth.
Born and raised in St. Louis by her single mother, Leota Hoke, she eloped with her sweetheart Gene Morrison on April 3, 1942. They were married 66 years before his death in 2008. Norma and Gene raised five children.
Norma is survived by son Mark Morrison (Kay) and daughters Donna Potts (David), Deborah Lee Oberlag (late Steve), Denise Morrison and late daughter Dianne Smith's husband Joe (Katie), plus many descendants including nine grandchildren: Scott Smith, Julie Smith Eckley, Jessica Smith, Matthew Smith, Christopher Potts (Anna), Carrie Potts Fernandez (Miguel), Cindy Potts Tyler (Ben), Toby Morrison Calvert (Craig) and Todd Morrison (Stacy); 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The family gathered as often as possible even as jobs and life journeys took them to cities across the country. Her 90th and 95th birthdays were celebrated in Cincinnati which gave her great joy. She missed her 97th birthday by less than one week.
In 1970 Norma and Gene moved from St. Louis county to the small town of Gerald, MO, located 80 miles south of the city. They bought a home on 27 acres where Gene enjoyed puttering around with tractors and his large shed while Norma raised a huge garden of vegetables and flowers. Norma's dear mother, Leota, lived with them for many years and was a wonderful part of the three-generation household (she died in 1992). Norma and Gene lived in Gerald for 30 years.
Norma was well-known for her green thumb and loved to share her knowledge of plants with anyone who needed advice. When the couple moved to The Lodge Retirement Community in 2000, she became the volunteer "manager" of the facility's greenhouse during the winter months. She had so many plants in their cottage and on their small patio that it was often hard to find a place to sit. Gene managed the Lodge's general store. The active couple played chair volleyball and took advantage of many outings and activities. Norma amazed everyone with her knickknacks and decorative collections on display at her Lodge cottage.
Norma had an amazing sense of humor, quick wit and a twinkle in her eye almost every day. There wasn't much she missed in world news and she took an interest in all her family's activities. She was full of joy and woke up every morning with a positive outlook on life. A devout Christian her entire life, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mason, and her solid faith in God and family was one of her enduring legacies.
Norma stayed sharp by reading and solving daily cross-word puzzles plus she was "famous" on Facebook for the hundreds of jigsaw puzzles she completed. She was continually surprised and tickled at the number of Facebook comments about her puzzles.
The extended family will gather in Gerald, MO next year when the flowers are blooming to celebrate Norma's amazing life. Her ashes, along with Gene's, will be buried together in a small cemetery on the grounds of the New Friendship Baptist Church.
