IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael T.
Sorter
February 28, 1959 – February 14, 2025
It is with profound sadness but also celebration that we say goodbye to Michael T Sorter MD. He passed on February 14th at the age of 65 after his 2 year battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Patty (nee Kane) Sorter, their children Michael Sorter, Will (Brielle) Sorter, and Dana (Cameron Kruse) Sorter and beloved grandchildren CeCe and Kane. He was a cherished brother of Dave (Lori Doran) Sorter, Tom (Patti) Sorter, and Sherie Pierce and proud uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike grew up in the Cincinnati area attending Our Lady of the Rosary for grade school, after which he graduated from Roger Bacon High School. He would always say that he had the ideal childhood with the most loving parents, David and Charleen, as well as a wonderful relationship with his siblings, brothers Dave and Tom, and sister Sherie. He always looked back on his childhood memories with great fondness and appreciation.
Mike's lifelong love of animals and nature was always present in his life through his frequent hiking and fishing trips with friends, travel with family, and visits to the Cincinnati Zoo and local bird sanctuaries. As a youth he worked closely with the zoo to help care for and raise adolescent animals prior to release into the wild or admittance into an exhibit. Some of his charges included owls, raccoons, snakes and even alligators. His loving parents were gracious enough to let him keep the various wildlife species in their basement while Mike would care for them, which provided many humorous and heartfelt memories for him and his siblings.
He met the love of his life Patty while attending an Ohio State Botany class. After graduation from OSU they moved to Cincinnati where Mike went to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship in Child Psychiatry. They proceeded to have three children, Michael, Will and Dana. Mike ingrained a strong sense of empathy, compassion and kindness into his children through his words and actions. He was a devoted father and loving husband.
Mike's professional career was equally as impressive. He was Director of the Division of Child Psychiatry for the past 21 years at Cincinnati Children's helping countless providers learn the skill sets necessary to give compassionate care with mindfulness for all of the developmental challenges that patients and families face. Scores of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists that have trained at Cincinnati Children's are now excellent clinicians and faculty who have disseminated across the country and continue to support his vision and mission for care within their communities.
Mike touched the lives of so many, allowing his dedication to family, friends and community to live on. Through his unwavering dedication to the care of others, he has truly made the world a better place, and he will be dearly missed.
Family and friends will be received from 5-7 PM on Thursday, February 20 at Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home, 129 N Riverside Ave, Loveland, OH 45140. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 21 at St. Columban Catholic Church, 894 Oakland Rd, Loveland, OH 45140. Interment Gate of Heaven.
