Mary Elizabeth (Stark) Hurlbut Graham, "Patsy", passed peacefully into eternity on January 4th at the age of 96 with Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Patsy was a 90 year active resident of Adrian Michigan, living in Cincinnati Ohio for the past six years. Born on September 4th, 1924, she was the adopted daughter of Dr. Emily Stark of Adrian. She was preceeded in death by her brother, Paul Stark, her first husband, Richard Hurlbut (37 years) and second husband, Charles Graham (25 years). Patsy was a 1942 graduate of Adrian High School and a 1946 graduate of Bowling Green State University. She taught Kindergarten for 30 years in the Adrian public school system, primarily at Lincoln and Prairie schools.
Surviving her are her daughter Nancy (Sam) Cunningham of Cincinnati, OH, son John Hurlbut of Ocala, FL, two granddaughters, Emily (Michael) Shiverski of Loveland, OH and Amy (Marty) Homan of Clayton, NC and 6 great grandchildren. Surviving Graham step-children are Linda (Tom) Terlesky, Charles Jr. (Bev) Graham, Patty (Garry) Cleveland, all of Adrian, Charlene (Mike) Tudor of Wentzville, MO, 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Patsy will always be known as a large presence in a small frame. Her generosity was unparalleled. She loved entertaining with her endless jokes and effervescent personality, bringing fun and laughter to every gathering. As a kindergarten teacher she single-handedly managed two dozen 5 year olds where her penchant for creativity and imagination kept generations of children under her spell.
Patsy was an avid bridge player, golfer and gardener. Rarely was she seen without a broom in hand and always fully dressed for gardening with her coordinating clip-on earrings. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Adrian and held leadership roles in the Garden Club, Dramatic Club and Tau Delta Sorority. Patsy loved the theater, both as an on-stage performer and an avid supporter of the arts and Croswell Opera House in Adrian. Having had the opportunity to do some extensive travelling in her later years, there would never be a place on earth that could compare to her beloved childhood cottage on Devils Lake where she spent every summer for 90 years.
As a mother, grandmother, aunt or friend, this special lady will be sorely missed. Even in her last six years she never lost her quick witted humor and ability to bring laughter. The family is forever grateful for the loving caregivers she had with Our Family Home, Angels Care and Queen City Hospice.
A graveside service and celebration of life will be held at a later date in Adrian. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Memorial Fund of First United Presbyterian Church of Adrian or Queen City Hospice at www.queencityhospice.com/donate.
