He was a proud member of the Jefferson HS Basketball Team, which made it to the 1957 championship game in the Clinton County Basketball Tournament. Marvin and Melvin also played as a catcher/pitcher duo on the Jefferson baseball team. Marvin and his twin Melvin were very competitive players. Who was better? Marvin always answered "Melvin." During his years farming, Marvin could always count on Melvin being his best farm hand and to wave at anyone who waved because they would assume Melvin was Marvin.
He also played French horn in the high school band. He graduated as one of the 17 members of the 1957 Jefferson HS senior class. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army National Guard and served for six years, being discharged in 1964. Thereafter, Marvin was employed at Brown Publishing (later Curless Printing Co.) for ten years and helped his father, Granville Chamberlin, in the family farm operation near Westboro. In the 1970s, he decided to become a full-time farmer, his father wishing to retire. Marvin produced beef, soybeans, wheat and corn during his many years of farming activity in the Westboro area. Marvin continued his career in farming until retiring in 2019 at the age of 80. His good friends, Gene and Keith Gibson, continue to farm his land. Marvin believed strongly in the preservation of farmland and in 2015, he permanently preserved part of his farmland with Cardinal Land Conservancy.
In 1958, he married Doris Moore and had three children with her, later marrying Joann Curliss in 1999.
Marvin was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church from age 12 to the date of his death. He was very active in his church, holding various offices, including Elder, and being a Sunday School Teacher. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir.

Marvin was forty-year member of the Clinton County Republican Central Committee and served fifteen years as a member of the Clinton Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He also served as Board President of the CMH Board. Marvin also served as a member of the Clinton County Landmark Board which later became Sunrise Cooperative.
He and wife Joann enjoyed travel, including trips to Alaska, the Black Hills, Florida, Michigan, and other places.
Marvin loved sports, spending time with his children and grandchildren and was happiest when he was working the land and being with his family. And he was a good Euchre player, a pastime he enjoyed with family. In the fall, he would hold a family get-together called "Selection Sunday," and allowed the family to choose and take home many pumpkins and gourds.
