Obituary

Margaret Elizabeth (Graman) (Margie McDonald) of Cincinnati, Ohio, died peacefully in her bed on November 30, 2014, after a long illness. She was 84 years old. She is survived by a loving family of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Margaret was born in Dayton, Ohio, the oldest child of Mary Elizabeth (Blair) and H. Robert Graman. Margaret Graman attended Stivers High School where she studied Art with Martha Schauer. At the age of 14, she won 2nd place for her coat design, and had her picture published in the March, 1945 Calling All Girls Magazine. Margaret was married to James McDonald, and they raised their two children, Dan and Eileen, in Evendale, Ohio, where she sold encyclopedias, was a hostess for Welcome Wagon, and served as a dental assistant in Mt. Healthy and Wyoming. Margaret met Howard Everett Mailly of College Hill, a widower caring for 6 children, Wayne, Karel, Guy, Kevin, Brad, and Todd. They married in 1978. By 1990, Margaret had more time to pursue her interest in painting trains, visiting rail sites across the country with her husband, and getting to know the folks who kept historic trains running. She was awarded signature membership in 4 Watercolor Societies, and her paintings have been exhibited in at least 19 museums and historic rail sites throughout the country since 1996. From 1996 until her last exhibit in 2009, Mrs. Mailly's train paintings were an integral part of the old CG&E (Cinergy) model train display downtown, displayed on the walls surrounding the train exhibit. At one of her last exhibits, in July of 2009, Margaret Mailly exhibited 52 of her transparent watercolor rail images in the visitor's center at Train Festival in Owosso, Michigan. Eventually, failing health prevented her from painting the precise details of her photo realistic paintings for which she is now known by rail fans and art enthusiasts across the country, but she never stopped planning her next painting. A Memorial Exhibition celebrating her life and work is scheduled for March 27-29th at the Cincinnati Art Club Gallery, 1021 Parkside Place, 45202, in Mt. Adams. Visiting hours are Friday 5-8pm. Saturday and Sunday 1-4pm. Contact margaretrailart@msn.com for details.
