Lewise Kalsbeek passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 22 at Mason Christian Village. She is remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Lewise's gentle, quiet spirit moved as a strong force in people's lives; her humble example of care and service inspired many. Her creativity brought joy to others.
Lewise Wickersham was born and raised on a dairy farm in eastern Pennsylvania. She attended Westtown Boarding School and Earlham College, both affiliated with the Quaker tradition, which influenced her faith and philosophy of life. It was at Earlham that she met Ted Kalsbeek. After graduation she worked as a dietician and cafeteria manager in Pittsburgh while Ted attended Pittsburgh Seminary. In 1951, they were married at the Harmony Road Quaker Meeting House in West Grove, Pennsylvania. They moved to Ohio when Ted was called to be pastor at a small, country church twenty miles outside of Cincinnati - - Sycamore Presbyterian.
Lewise was an active participant in every facet of the life and work of Sycamore for over 50 years. Not only was she the pastor's wife, but she also used her gifts and abilities in many ways. As a new young pastor's wife in the early 1950s, she made the draperies and dossel curtain for the sanctuary, which is now the Kalsbeek chapel. Lewise was pivotal in all communications with the church community - calling for fund raising efforts, recruiting volunteers for special projects, and initiating prayer chains .
As a volunteer, Lewise served as the church's first secretary, a Sunday School teacher, and the director of the midweek Jet Cadets youth club for 10 years. She served as church librarian for 22 years and also created and maintained the church archives. She was an organizing force behind church dinners as well as an active participant in the Eunice Women's Circle. She baked the communion bread for church communion services for well over 40 years. She shared her calligraphy skills by preparing countless certificates and documents within the life of the church and she brought her artistic talent to every bulletin board, poster and publication. Never seeking attention nor accolades, for five decades Lewise was a quiet, unassuming, caring presence who sustained a rapidly growing church community.
All the while, Lewise raised four children. She faithfully made sure that books were read, music was practiced, homework was finished and chores were complete. Her favorite pastimes were needlework and quilting. She kept the shelves and freezer stocked with home-grown corn, beans, tomatoes and peach jam. There were always fresh cookies and kuchen coffee cake in the pantry. Her meticulous record-keeping was amazing, allowing us to this day to know what she spent on weekly groceries in 1962. She did all of this with a dry sense of humor, quick wit, and love of laughter. Her calling was to be a homemaker and her highest priority was to make a home that was safe, secure and sustained by love and faith.
Lewise lives on through her four children and their spouses, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her life's humble legacy is one of caring and sharing. May she rest in peace, a good and faithful servant.
