Obituary

Katheryn Lockyear, 96, of Lebanon, Ohio, passed away February 9, 2013 at Otterbein Retirement Community in Lebanon, OH. She was born August 10, 1916 in Georgetown, Ohio, daughter of Walter Kattine and Dorothy (Busch) Kattine . Katheryn worked as a office clerk for RCA, Sears, Chatfield Paper Corporation and Jewish Hospital . She was a member of the Catholic Church where her dear friend, Helen Kahsar introduced her to Catholicism in 1945. She loved the Catholic Church and found it to be of comfort to her during the tumultuous times in her life. Katheryn had many hobbies, interests, activities and other enjoyment: As an artist Katheryn painted in oils, acrylic and watercolors, pastel, charcoal and pencil and pen and ink. Art was her passion. Picasso and the old masters were of great interest to her. Katheryn's love of nature and the outdoors was evidenced by the many charcoal and pencil drawings and watercolors of farm fields and trees. She loved to draw and paint while vacationing at her father's Georgetown farm. As a homeowner, she enjoyed gardening and tinkering with household repairs. Katheryn developed her culinary talents and the family was appreciative. She loved hosting Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners with her daughter and grandchildren. Her gravy making was of gourmet quality. Some of the notable dishes that were her specialty were barbecue chicken, Brussels sprouts, sour cream cucumbers, tomato/onion/cucumber vinegar salad and all the fixings for the Thanksgiving dinner. Katheryn was a devoted mother who instilled strong values and sacrificed much to send her daughter to 12 years of parochial education. She was an avid reader of novels and murder mysteries; she was a true bookworm until macular degeneration blinded her. When Benet's syndrome caused her to see images that were not thereshe learned to live with the visions after researching the syndrome. She enjoyed describing the peculiar aberrations with humor. Opera and Classical music was also a passion. Katheryn was especially fond of attending Cincinnati Zoo operas, favoring the opera "Carmen". The Blue Danube by Strauss remained a comfort for Katheryn through the last months of her life. She enjoyed a good Scotch and loud and happy laughs with friends. Katheryn had a soft spot for rescuing feral cats, hurt animals and birds throughout her lifetime. Even at Otterbein she managed to attract lost and disenfranchised furry felines; not to everyone's liking. She was known for telling great stories about her life before and during WWII. She had an adventurous spirit and loved talking about California & taking flying lessons. Not only did she enjoy reading about adventurous charactersshe was inspired by them.
