Joseph Conwell Smith peacefully passed away on November 10, 2020 day in Milford, OH, where he has resided the last four months. His home is in Wolcottville, IN on Adams Lake where he has lived for the past 40 years.
Joe was born as the first baby of the New Year on January 1, 1929, in Connorsville, IN to his parents, Conwell Rawlins Smith and Marion Smith (nee Kinsinger).
He was raised in Indianapolis, IN and attended his beloved Arsenal Technical High School. Throughout the years, he was always asking his family if they'd like to take a tour of the Tech grounds. Upon graduation he joined the U.S.Army. After his service, he attended Butler University where he was a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. It was during this time at Butler that he met his future bride, Jacquelin "Jackie" Lee Allen. They were married on December 1, 1950 in Indianapolis, and as a couple they went on to give birth and raise their three daughters in that city.
Joe worked in several positions as a salesman. Most of his work was with the Barnes Group-Bowman Distribution Co., a purveyor of fasteners, which in 1974 required a move to Cleveland, OH. He retired as a Regional Manager in 1991. Joe certainly "worked to live" as he and Jackie enjoyed travel. He was a man that followed a variety of sports including volleyball, IU basketball, football and of course the Indy 500, but golf was his favorite sport by far.
He and Jackie moved to Adams lake in 1981 where they enjoyed many wonderful years together with family and friends. Joe was a member of the LaGrange American Legion Post 215. He also had a delightful "family" at the Adams Lake Pub where he relished in a time of camaraderie and listening to his signature song, Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline". He and Jackie celebrated 67 years of marriage before the passing of Jackie on May 4, 2018.
Joe will be remembered as a fun loving, very social jokester by those that knew him. He was ruled by his constant sense of humor.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Conwell and Marion; his wife, Jacquelin, and his brother, David N. Smith. He is survived by his daughters, Kathryn Aggen (James) of Homewood, IL; Constance Bateman (Richard) of Loveland, OH; and Donna Burch (Alan) of Batavia, OH. He was "Papa Joe" to eight grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, Ryan, Mark, Joanna, Jackie, Neil and Evan; and six great-grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
