Joachim E. Parrella, a resident of Deupree House in Cincinnati since 2010, died at his home on Sunday, April 28, 2013. Joachim (Jo) was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on April 10, 1930, to Gioacchino Erasmus Parrella and Angelina Fera Parrella. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancianne Parrella; his two daughters Amy Noznesky, her husband David, and her daughter Megan Strauss, of Hobe Sound, Florida, and Lisa OConnell, her husband Terry and their daughters Catherine Rose and Madeline Kellett, of Loveland, Ohio.
He is also survived by his brother Jasper E. Parrella and his wife Connie of Morrisville, Pa.; his brother Luigi G. Parrella of Brazil; and his sisters Aurora D. Parrella of West Trenton, N.J, and Gilda C. Parrella, of Chicago. He was predeceased by his brother Paul. Jo was a special mentor to many young people but particularly to Suse Fruhhaber Evans of Germany and Kaori Hongo Moyer of Japan.
Jo's father, an American Baptist minister, moved the family from New Haven to Trenton, N.J., where Jo remained, and where he and Nancianne married at First Presbyterian Church --the same church where his parents had met.
Jo began a career in aircraft engineering, but later decided to go back to school to study to be a teacher of choral music. It was always the love of his life. He sang in church choirs and in small groups, wrote choral arrangements, managed choruses, established boards to help organize them, wrote publicity and programs and later became a recording engineer for concerts. He started teaching at age 31. He taught first in the Trenton, N.J., public schools and then in Princeton N.J. schools for 32 years, notably as the Choral Director at John Witherspoon Middle School, where he established a very successful choral program.
When Nancianne began as an accompanist for legendary choral conductor Robert Shaw's workshops in Princeton and later in France, Jo worked as a team with Mr. Shaw, preparing scores and arranging all the logistical details of performances. He served a similar function for the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, arranging every detail of concerts for a major tour of Germany.
From 1995-2009, Jo served as Logistics Coordinator for the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City, where Nancianne serves as Associate Organist. There he crafted detailed schematics and precise timelines for each concert and worked with the facilities staff to carry out the plans. His work was behind the scenes - unseen, mostly unrecognized by all but a few, but absolutely essential to the success of the performances.
In his honor, a memorial fund for the maintenance of the N. P. Mander Organ is being set up in Jo's name at St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City. Jo was well organized and did his job with meticulous attention to detail. He believed this allowed the musicians to make music without distraction by non- musical issues. Maintenance of the organ is a good example of his credo. To contribute to this fund, visit www.stignatiusloyola.org/index.php/music/.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, May 5, at 1:00 p.m. at Deupree House, 3939 Erie Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45208. A Memorial Mass for Jo's family and friends will be held at The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 980 Park Avenue, at 84th Street, New York City, on Sunday, May 26th at 3:00 p.m.
