Obituary

James D. Bishop, age 84 of Loveland, Ohio died peacefully at home on June 12, 2021. He was born in Clay County, Kentucky to Oscar and Mae Bishop. He was preceded in death by both parents and his brothers Christie and Arnold Bishop. He is survived by his sister Rose Jackson and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well as cousins. Beloved husband of 62 years to Phyllis Bishop (nee Bruner). Loving father to Pamela and David (Janet). Dear grandfather of Joshua (Meghan), Justin (Ana), Elizabeth and Scotty and cherished great-grandfather to Hannah, Jack, Evelynn and Dexter. Unfortunately, he didn't live to meet his expected newest great-grandchild, Theodore Andrew. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and then entered Sue Bennett College in London, Kentucky. He began teaching at a time when teachers were in very short supply and was able to begin teaching without a degree. He taught in the Northeastern School District for two years. In 1963, he began teaching in the Loveland City Schools. He taught science for 10 years at the Middle School and High School. In addition, he coached several sports, but his love was basketball. During this time, he received his Bachelor's degree from Cumberland College, and his Master's degree at Murray State University. He went to Kings High School in 1973 to be the varsity boys' basketball coach and assistant principal. He remained there for 15 years until his retirement in 1989. He loved coaching basketball and watching his players grow into confident young men. He enjoyed his job as assistant principal working with the students and teachers. He was inducted into the Kings High School Athletic Hall of Fame as coach in 2000. He and his wife, Phyllis, began volunteering at the LPGA and the ATP tournaments at Jack Nicholas Golf Course in Mason, Ohio running concessions and raising money for local school athletic and music booster groups. This led to volunteering with the Cincinnati Bicentennial Commission as concessions management for all the Bicentennial events held in celebration of Cincinnati's 200th anniversary year 1988. After this, they began Bishop Concession Management and worked with local special event producers to do country music festivals all over the United States as well as other events in Cincinnati like Tall Stacks and Jammin' on Main and events such as Red, White and Boom! Ribsfest and Seafood Festival in Columbus, Ohio. They used their concessions management company to again help raise money for local charities and school athletic and music booster groups in the various cities where these events were held. Jim opened The Antique Cupboard in Olde Loveland in 1996 and ran the business for seven years until his cancer diagnosis and treatment. He loved many things about antiques. He started by collecting Hummels and then moved on to many other things. His wife joked that he had to open a shop or have an auction as the house was running over with his antiques.   After his recovery, he and Phyllis traveled all over the United States visiting National Parks and various National Monuments as well as areas of interest. They began a love affair with Phoenix and spent their winters there for the past 10 years. They made many friends along the way whom they have missed this past year. Memorial donations may be made in Jim's memory to Hospice of Cincinnati. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 18 from 6-8 PM at Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home, 129 N. Riverside Ave., Loveland where funeral services will be held Saturday, June 19 at 10:30 AM. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
