IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Irene M.
Tackett
December 5, 1926 – October 11, 2025
Irene M Tackett (née Gaddis) Born December 5th, 1926, in Corbin, Kentucky. Irene came to Cincinnati Ohio with her sister, Helen, in 1945. The two of them boarded a bus and when arriving in Cincinnati, put their belongings in a locker and walked the streets in Cincinnati to locate a place to live. The sisters lived in a boarding house, working at a nearby Dime Store downtown. Irene loved living in Cincinnati, with dress shops and diners close by. She enjoyed taking a streetcar to Crosley Field to watch her beloved Cincinnati Reds. She fondly recalled the end of WWII and the celebrating crowd out on Fountain Square. One by one, most of her sisters and brothers relocated from Corbin Kentucky to the Cincinnati Area. Irene fed and housed all of them until they got jobs and established homes here.
Irene met and married Jim Tackett in 1948. They lived briefly in Mt. Auburn before moving to Norwood, Ohio where Jim worked for Fisher Body. Irene was very interested in unions and serving to support the rights of workers. Irene attended her husband's Union meetings to learn about the process and how they were helping their members.
In 1953, Irene moved to Loveland Ohio where she and Jim made a home on Hanna Avenue. They raised their 3 children there. Irene went to work at U.S. Playing Card Company in 1960. A very solid employee, she was elected by her coworkers as a Union Shop steward. She loved serving in this role to fight for the rights and safety of the employees there. Jim died in 1985, and Irene lived in their Loveland home for 59 years. Irene retired in the late 1980's. She served for many years working at the polls on Election Day. A proud Democrat, she longed to see a woman President in her lifetime. In the 2017 Women's March at the age of 90, Irene proudly marched for Women's rights carrying a sign that read "Ninety, Nasty and Not Giving Up!" Photos of Irene went viral and caught the attention of Hillary Clinton who mentioned Irene's sign in her book "What Happened". Hillary wrote Irene a personal note which she cherished receiving.
The love of her life was her family. She would tell everyone that she "came from a family of 11." Something she cherished, having 7 sisters and 3 brothers. She was a very devoted Mom, Mam Maw, Sister and Aunt. Her greatest gift was one of generosity. She gave without expectation of any reciprocity, telling others to "just help somebody else." She absolutely adored babies and children and just lit up when in their presence, singing made up songs and genuinely enjoying being around them.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Julie (Mike Hall); grandchildren, Mathew Brown, Jennifer Brown, Michael Hall II (Dierdre Friel), Nicholas Hall, Kacie Prather (Alan), Karrie Garneret (Martin); great grandchildren, Owen Prather and Evelyn Garneret; Daughter in Law, Susan Tackett; Son in Law, Donald Brown; Sister, Sandra Bays and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her mom, Lillie Mae Frances Gaddis (née Cunningham) and dad, Cannary (CA) Gaddis of Corbin, Kentucky; husband, James (Jim) Tackett, son, Gregory (Greg)Tackett; daughter, Linda Brown; grandson, James (Jim) Tackett and great grandson, Michael Hall III; brothers, Howard, (Marjorie) Gaddis, Loyd Gaddis, and Wayne (Judy) Gaddis; sisters, Helen (Roy) Prince, Lola Gaddis, Wilma (Carl) Johnson, Evelyn (Walter) Grey, Carol (Pat) Craver and Darlene Poore.
