Obituary

Harold Lee Murphy went to be with Jesus on January 24, 2022. He was born April 2, 1940 in South Lebanon, Ohio but moved to Blanchester shortly after, the town where he would joyfully spend his years on earth. Harold grew up on a farm in a big family, a childhood that instilled in him a strong work ethic that would remain for the rest of his life. He retired from Cincinnati Milacron in 1999 after a 35 year career as a machinist. Retired life didn't sit well with him, though, and he began his second career with Blanchester Schools. He started out with the transportation department, a van driver as he would often call himself, shuttling students to alternative schools and transporting students that were unable to ride a bus. After driving for several years, he took a job as an aide in the middle school. He treasured the opportunity to work with students facing challenges, showing them a love and kindness that they may not have received anywhere else, and entertained his family with many stories from his time working for the schools. One of his students in particular, Dakota Culberson, held a special place in his heart and was one who he would talk about long after he retired. Although Harold had a long and full career, there was nothing more important to him than his family. He married Maureen McCarthy in 1961 and they would spend the next 60 years together, not enough time for a love as strong as theirs. They had three children, Russell, Colleen (Rob) Richmond, and Missy (Jeff) Johnson. For the past 31 years, Harold's life revolved around his four grandkids, Cody Johnson, Josh Richmond, McKayla (Joe) Weil, and Cole Johnson. Countless hours were spent attending their school and sporting events, playing basketball in the driveway, hosting family dinners, or any other activity that allowed him to spend time with them. One of his favorite pastimes was gathering family to watch Bengals, Bearcats, Buckeyes, and Reds games. Harold had a strong faith in God and was a longtime member of Pleasant Grove Community Church. He loved his church family and enjoyed telling people how he sat in the same seat in the back row all the decades he attended services. Harold was a great husband, father, grandpa, employee, neighbor, and friend. He never hesitated to make whoever he came in contact with feel like they were loved and although his death leaves an immeasurable gap in the lives of many, his legacy is strong. Harold is survived by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Rose (Dick) Ott, Shirley (Bob) Boyd and Patricia Cox; sister-in-law Phyllis Murphy; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, son, two brothers, and two sisters. A small, private service will be held due to the Covid pandemic. The family has plans for a celebration of life later this year and will share details once finalized.
