Obituary

Gustave Neuss, Jr. of Maineville, Ohio, beloved husband of Marjorie Hallock (Deutzman) Neuss, father of Marjorie (Neuss) Niesen, Barbara (Neuss) Moran and Gustave Neuss, III (Sherida). Predeceased by parents Gustave Neuss, Sr. and Olive (Cousineau) Neuss, he was born in Brooklyn, NY, October 7, 1912. Grandchildren: Michael (JoAnne), Joseph (Yvonne) and Christopher (Lisa) Niesen, Robert Lee Moran (Teri) and Paul Moran, Jr., Gustave IV, Gregory, Stephen (Heather) Neuss, Kathleen Harmon (Tony), Jennifer Russo (Mike), and Donald Neuss, seventeen great grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren. He was also the brother of William (Ottilie) and Henry (Ruth) Neuss, both deceased, and Olive (Neuss) Williams (deceased) (Robert), and numerous nieces and nephews. Beginning 1935 he worked at the WPA, with responsibility for roads in Suffolk and Nassau Counties, New York. He spent many years in the manufacturing and testing of aircraft engines with the Fairchild Engine & Aircraft Corp. in Farmingdale, NY, the Packard Motor Car Company, in Toledo, OH and the General Electric Co, in Oak Ridge TN and Evendale, OH. While at the latter location, living in Springdale, OH, he chaired the committee, which incorporated that community in November 1959. He was elected first Mayor of the new Village of Springdale in May 1960. In his second term of office, in 1962, he transferred to the General Electric Aerospace Division at Utica, NY, requiring him to resign his mayor's position, which was then taken over by the Vice Mayor, Charles Lindner. In 1971 he transferred from General Electric, Utica, NY to General Electric Transit Car Division in Erie, PA, retiring from this operation in 1977. He attended Utica College of Syracuse University. In retirement he did consulting for manufacturing management training and was an active member of Service Corps Of Retired Executives (SCORE), giving assistance to a variety of small businesses. He received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy. An avid sailor while in upstate New York, he is past Commodore of the Otsego Sailing Club in Cooperstown, NY. He is a past Commodore of the Erie Yacht Club In Erie, PA, and is a Director Emeritus of the Pennsylvania Boating Association, a past member of National Boating Federation Intl. Order of the Blue Gavel, and the Erie Power Squadron. He was an instructor for courses while a member of the Squadron. Through the years he was member of several church choirs, the Suffolk County L.I. Glee Club, and in the 1950s the Orpheus Glee Club in Cincinnati. A member of Good Shepherd Parish, he was a Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Grady Assembly, Knoxville, TN, and the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Robert Goodall Assembly in Erie.
