IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gordon Macgregor
Strauss
February 2, 1947 – March 10, 2024
Gordon Strauss, age 77, passed away on March 10, 2024 due to acute myeloid leukemia. He was born February 2, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Victor and Dana (Maher) Strauss. He grew up in the Indian Hill suburb of Cincinnati and attended Indian Hill School, St. Paul's School (Concord, NH), and Brown University. After college, he spent three years as an officer of Marines, including a year in Vietnam, receiving a Meritorious Bronze Star for his service.
After the Marines, he went to law school at the University of Cincinnati. He practiced law for most of the next forty years. The first part of his career was devoted to electoral politics. His first job was working for the General Counsel to the Republican National Committee. Thereafter, both in Washington, DC and Cincinnati, he represented candidates and political organizations. He was General Counsel to the Ohio Republican Party and Newt Gingrich was among his clients. The culmination of that practice was going to South Africa a month before Nelson Mandela was elected. He and three other lawyers taught twenty-four new political parties about the country's new constitution and how to teach their members how to vote. During this time, he was pleased to be named Parliamentarian for the Committee on Rules and Order of Business and served in four Republican National Conventions. The second part of his career was spent with Hamilton County, Ohio as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, and he later retired as a Magistrate in Probate Court.
Upon retirement, Gordon reinvented himself for farm life and became an exemplary handyman and farm hand. He especially enjoyed the chickens, goats, and horses, as well as any tractor work.
Gordon enjoyed serving others and was active at Episcopal churches wherever he lived including Indian Hill Church, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, St. Paul's Church (Akron. OH), St. John's Episcopal Church (Ft. Smith, AR), and St. Luke's Episcopal Church (Granville, OH). Helping young people succeed was his passion and he was involved with the Acolytes programs, taught Sunday school, tutored young students in after school programs, and co-founded (with Rev. Paul Long) the Juvenile Detention Center ministry (Indian Hill Church). Gordon attended many bible studies throughout his years and was especially fond of the Indian Hill Friday morning bible study and its dedicated members. During the last two years of his life, while battling leukemia, he trained to become a Volunteer Chaplain at Christ Hospital.
Gordon will be remembered by his quick wit, incredible command of the English language, and love of family, friends, and country. He loved the animals in his life and they loved him. He leaves behind, foremost, his wife and lodestar, Julie Burdick, grandsons by his late son Joshua MortonStrauss, Ryan and Brennan, his son Kayser (Keiko) Strauss, and grandchildren Ayleen and Oren, his siblings, Vic, Geoff (Jane), Cita Strauss and the late Nicholas Strauss.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1809 Rutland Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45207. Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM with service following at 11:00 AM. Following the service, a light lunch will be provided. Inurnment to be scheduled at a later date at Goshen Cemetery.
