Obituary

Gene Edward Driscoll, also known as "The Big Man," was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 5, 1927 and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 8, 2014. Son of the late Jack and Mary (nee Reddington) Driscoll, brother of the late Roger Driscoll. Preceded in death by his wonderful, loving wife, Barbara (nee Dilworth) Driscoll, whom he married on September 26, 1953. Best dad ever to Kitty (Jack) Paschall, Joan (Harvey) Meier, Dan Driscoll (Linda York), Martin (Bizzy) Driscoll, and Brian Driscoll (Beth Mandel). Proud and loving grandfather to Nicole Meier and Jacob and Lauren Driscoll. Brother-in-law of Jeanne Driscoll, Jerry (Ginny) Dilworth, and James (Marilyn) Dilworth. Gene Graduated from St. Xavier High School and Xavier University, where he served as President of the Student Body, Editor of the Yearbook, and President of the Musketeer Club. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, served as a radioman aboard a U.S. Naval minesweeper in the Pacific in WWII, and later ran a successful business with his father and brother. Active in the Cincinnati community, he was the President of the Grocers Manufacturing Assn., a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus, a counselor at Ft. Scott Camp, a volunteer at the Special Olympics, and a supporter of too many other groups to list. He was instrumental in the building of and festivals at St. Gertrude Church in Madeira, and loved participating in Cincinnati's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. A lover of sports throughout his life, he played basketball for Great Lakes Naval Academy under NFL Hall of Fame football coaches Bud Grant and Weeb Eubanks, and he coached little league, CYO basketball, and anything else as needed. He also enjoyed playing golf, after which he was known to fire up a grill and a stogie with his friends. Every Sunday, he hosted a family cookout, gathering all who were able to join in a big meal. He lived his Catholic faith and was always kind and extremely generous to all he met. He truly was a "man for others." He enriched all of our lives and his big footprint and even bigger heart won't be forgotten.
