IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fuheid S
Daoud M.D.
September 4, 1932 – June 5, 2025
Fuheid "Fred" Shakir Daoud, M.D. of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, June 5th, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born in the small village of Fuheis, Jordan, Fuheid was one of ten children raised in a modest two-room home. After graduating from the Bishops' School in Amman, Fuheid, age 19, and his brother Basheer, with little more than pocket change and the shirts on their backs, emigrated to the United States, ending their journey in Cincinnati, Ohio—a city that would become his lifelong home.
With a singular determination and drive that would define his life and future career, Fuheid worked multiple jobs during the day while attending the University of Cincinnati at night, earning his degree in 1956. After serving in the United States Army in Germany, he received a scholarship to the University of Heidelberg Medical School, where on his first day, he met Ingrid Hubner, a Czech-German medical student who would become his beloved wife.
After graduation, the couple returned to the United States to complete their medical training, first at Good Samaritan Hospital, and then the University of Kentucky Medical Center, in Lexington. At UK, Fuheid trained as a Fellow in Pulmonary Disease and specialized in Cardiology, eventually becoming an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of the UK Cardiovascular Research Laboratory.
In 1975, Fuheid moved his young family back to Cincinnati after accepting the new position of Director of Cardiology at Bethesda Hospital (TriHealth), where he was tasked with creating the hospital's first Cardiology Department. With unmatched passion and resolve, he served as Director from 1975 through 1991, achieving key milestones in the hospital's quest for cardiac excellence, including the establishment of cardiac catheterization and angiography, open heart surgery services, expanded access to outpatient cardiac services, and a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program. His profound love and dedication to the practice of medicine was all consuming, and he continued practicing well into his eighties.
Beyond his medical career, Fuheid was passionate about art and became known locally for his extensive art collection, consisting primarily of renowned Cincinnati artists. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Cincinnati Art Museum for many years, eventually becoming the Chairman of the Acquisition Committee. He and his wife played a pivotal role in the Nabataean exhibit "Petra: The Lost City of Stone," which debuted in 2004 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York before traveling to Cincinnati. It was celebrated as the greatest exhibition of Jordanian artifacts ever mounted.
During his retirement years, Fuheid enjoyed tinkering with antique cars, particularly older Mercedes-Benz automobiles—an enthusiasm that began as a young student seeing the majestic (and entirely unaffordable) vehicles on the streets of Germany.
Throughout his life, Fuheid remained deeply grateful for the opportunities the United States provided and the "American Dream" he and his family lived. He also never lost his deep love for his family and his homeland of Jordan, as well as the Jordanian culture and traditions he experienced as a young boy that helped forge his identity.
Fuheid is survived by his wife Ingrid Hubner, his brothers Fahhad and Fawzi, sisters Fowzieh and Faiseh, children Natasha Blumenfeld (Mark), Katja Daoud (Todd Kochheiser), and Jamal Daoud (Julie), and four grandchildren: Devin, Danielle, Ayla, and Anja.
