Dr. Fred J. Monzel died on June 30, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Jeanine C. (nee Stock) Monzel; son, Christopher (Jana); daughter-in-law, Megan; grandchildren, Mary Grace, Jacob, Andrew and Madeline; nieces and nephews, Lisa Alm, Edward Monzel, Kristen Monzel, William Monzel, Julia Bertot and many grand nieces and nephews. He is also predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Katherine Monzel; two older brothers, Carl Monzel and William Monzel; his son, Jeffrey Monzel; and nephew, Carl Monzel, Jr.
Fred was born in Michigan and raised in Indianapolis. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree with distinction, in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and was a member of Sigma Nu Social Fraternity, and the Mechanical Engineering Honorary Fraternity, Tau Beta Pi. Eight years after graduation, the University of Florida awarded him with a NASA traineeship for graduate study, where upon Fred earned a Master of Science in Engineering Degree and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree.
He began his engineering career with Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis. In 1957, Fred moved to Cincinnati to work for the Aircraft Engine Department of General Electric (now GE Aerospace) as a mechanical designer of various engine parts. While at GE, he developed the program / methodology for designing engine rotor parts to meet cyclic life requirements and fulfill FAA certification. His design work was significant in achieving ingenuity and engine reliability as acknowledged by his awards: three awards for authoring design practices that define, guide and detail the design of parts; four awards for participation on design boards that oversaw the proper design of parts; four patents; and the recipient of The Perry T. Egbert Award for the year's outstanding engineering achievement. At the time of his retirement, January 1991, Fred's position title was Chief Consulting Engineer-Analytical Design.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 6 from 8:45-9:45 AM at the Community of the Good Shepherd, 8815 East Kemper Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45249, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM.
