Frances "Erin" Diehl of Loveland, Ohio, died at home surrounded by her children on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Erin's beloved husband, David Diehl, preceded her in death on the same date, January 25, in 1988.
Erin was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She and Dave met during World War II when he was in the Air Force and stationed at a base in San Antonio. At the time of his death, they had been married for 43 years. During their marriage, both Dave and Erin were active in the Catholic Church; while living in Cincinnati, at St. Vivian's parish in Finneytown, and then, after their move to Loveland in 1968, at St. Columban's. Both Erin and Dave were oblates of the order of St. Benedict and counted many priests and nuns among their close friends (Dave's brother, the late Tom Diehl, was a Jesuit). Dave, a commercial artist, did a great deal of art and design work for St. Xavier High School, St. Columban's, St. Anthony Messenger, St. Meinrad's Archabbey in Indiana as well as posters for son Matt's theater productions while the latter was a student at Xavier University. After David passed in 1988, Erin, at the age of 64, matriculated college and wasted no time completing her education, earning a B.S. in Social Work at Xavier U followed by a Masters in Pastoral Counseling at the Athenaeum of Ohio. She became a certified clinical pastoral counselor in 1991 and worked for many years in this capacity with St. Columban Church under Fr. Terry Smith. Erin is survived by son Mark Thomas Diehl and wife Margaret Halpin of Cincinnati, son Matthew Stephen Diehl and wife Mary Kathryn Bessinger of Brooklyn, daughter Mary Brigit Trame nee Diehl and husband Glenn Trame of Loveland, and daughter Julie Anne Diehl and husband Bob Glasscock of Louisville. She was the proud grandmother of Shannon Marie Trame and David Francis Trame. Erin will be sorely missed and remembered by all who knew her as a woman of deep faith who was a compassionate listener and a true "people person," someone who savored her friends and family as well as her dogs and cats, and had room in her heart for everyone. Erin's visitation will be Friday, January 27, from 6-8 PM at Tufts Schildmeyer Family Funeral Home, 129 N Riverside Ave, Loveland, OH 45140. Her Mass of Resurrection will be held Saturday, January 28, at 10 AM at St. Columban, 894 Oakland Rd, Loveland, OH 45140. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Donations may be directed to The Matthew Kelly Foundation, 2330 Kemper Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45203 or Catholic Relief Services, PO Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203.
