Elizabeth, beloved wife of 33 years of Lan Ackley. Loving godmother of Emily (Joel) Law, Erica (Matt) Friedersdorf, and John Hurd Jr. Also survived by her mother-in-law Helen Ackley, her brother-in-law Robert Ackley, and her many friends, colleagues, and students. Preceded in death by her parents, Mary Louise and Warren Valentine Smith of Ashland, Kentucky. Elizabeth passed away Friday, July 22, 2005, at age 65. During her long and successful teaching career, Elizabeth touched many lives. She earned a bachelor's degree from Berea College and a master's degree in English from Xavier University. She taught for a year in Melbourne, Australia, as the youngest person A scholarship has been established in Elizabeth's name at Berea College.
