IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dr. Steven
Hawley
January 24, 1946 – October 16, 2024
Dr. Steven "Doc" Hawley of Symmes Township, Ohio. Beloved husband of 53 years to Audrey (nee Mowitt) Hawley. Loving father of Robyn (Christopher) Huemmer and Jason Hawley. Proud grandfather of Liam Christopher, Elizabeth Audrianne and the late C.J. and Olivia Huemmer. Passed away October 16, 2024, at the age of 78.
Born on January 24, 1946, in Healdsburg, California, he exhibited a passion for learning from a young age. He earned his Bachelor's degree from University of California-Berkeley, his Master's degree from Miami University, and his Doctoral degree from University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Hawley was a man focused on service to others. From his time spent in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic, to a career in education spanning over four decades from Peru, South America to Cincinnati, Ohio, he profoundly impacted countless students and people through his unwavering dedication to education.
Dr. Hawley had a love for the arts. He played the trumpet from a young age and was a member of the California All State Band. He shared his love for the trumpet with his son and grandson. He passed along his love for the arts by writing and directing school plays for middle and high school students from Peru, South America to Cincinnati, Ohio.
Doc touched many lives through his creation of the Virtual High School, P.A.C.E. Charter High School, and his development of the P.A.C.E.R. Program at Noble Prison. Over the years, Doc has formed relationships with many young men and served as their mentor as they navigated their lives. These young men were not only mentees, but they became family to Doc.
Dr. Hawley was actively involved in civics to continue to improve the lives of others, from serving as a City Councilman on the Forest Park City Council, as a volunteer at the LIFE food pantry to then serve on the Homeowners Association where he lived.
Outside of academia, Dr. Hawley was known for his dry and sarcastic sense of humor, his intelligence and his love for his family. He could score an entire swim meet in his head, coached his son's soccer team and read to his grandchildren. He was an avid Scrabble and Cribbage player and reader of many books. Over the years he dearly loved all of his dogs; Cholo, Blackberry and Winston. Some of his fond moments were vacationing in North Carolina, for over 30 years, with his family and dear friends and his many travels around the world with his dear wife Audrey.
To celebrate Dr. Hawley's life and contributions, family and friends will be received on Monday, October 21 from 12-1 PM at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 101 S. Lebanon Rd., Loveland, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 PM. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First New Shiloh Baptist Church Pantry at 710 Fred Shuttlesworth Circle, Cincinnati, OH 45229.
Dr. Steven Hawley will be deeply missed, but his spirit and dedication to education and service will live on in the hearts of all those he touched.
