Allen L. M.D. of Lynchburg, Ohio, age 70, a physician, formerly of Loveland, died Wednesday December 14, at Hospice of Cincinnati after a lengthy illness. Born in 1935 at Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati to Bernard and Esther Gettleman Straus. Dr. Straus graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1953 and went on to study zoology and medicine at the University of Cincinnati, receiveing his medical degree in 1961. He interned at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, Texas in 1961 – 1962. He returned to Jewish Hospital as a medical resident from 1962 – 1963. He then became a clinical fellow in infectious disease at the University of Cincinnati from 1963 – 1965; senior resident of internal medicine at Cincinnati General Hospital (University Hospital) from 1965 – 1966: chief resident of internal medicine at Cincinnati General Hospital from 1966 – 1967. Dr. Straus was drafted into the army and stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. After being certified by the American Board of internal medicine, Dr Straus returned to Cincinnati to practice medicine at Bethesda Oak, and North for over 30 years. Dr. Straus served as chairman of the the infection control committee ( 1983 – 1998), and director of the department of internal Medicine (1990 – 1992) at Bethesda Hospitals. Memberships included the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, Ohio State and American Medical Associations, American Medical Society on Alcoholism and the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Straus was active in the Physician Effectiveness Program for many years and medical director at CCAT. In appreciation for his leadership in the recovery community and his contribution to the Sami Project in Hamilton County, Dr. Straus received a surprise award from Governor Richard Celeste in 1885. Upon his retirement in 1998, Dr. Straus continued to collect old cars, cats, and dogs. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts in Allen's memory be directed to Friends of Bill W., the Lynchburg United Methodist Church, or Circle Tail, 8834 Carey Lane Pleasant Plain, Ohio 45162.
