Obituary

John "Dale" McKibben of Mason, OH, passed away December 18, 2024, at the age of 86. Beloved husband of 36 years to Evelyn McKibben. Devoted father of J.D. (Jennifer Misiak) McKibben, kind-hearted stepfather to Tim Ashley, Todd Ashley, Tom (Lori) Ashley, and Tracy Ashley. Cherished grandfather of 5 grandchildren and 5 (soon to be 6) great-grandchildren. Caring brother of Glenn McKibben. Loving uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

Born on September 23, 1938, in Covington, Kentucky, Dale's journey through life was marked by his infectious joy, love for sports, and dedication to his family and friends. A proud graduate of Dixie Heights High School, Dale shone as a student-athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and track. His athletic prowess and leadership on the field set the stage for his lifelong passion for sports. He was celebrated as an NKAC All Star and earned a spot on the Kentucky All State team as an Honorable Mention for his exceptional skill in football. His athletic versatility shone through when he qualified for the Kentucky state track meet as a self-taught pole-vaulter. He left an indelible mark on his alma mater, being crowned Prom King in his junior year and honored as the Outstanding Senior Boy. In 1959, he married Shirley McKibben (nee King), and together they welcomed their son, J.D., into the world.

During his college years, Dale served as a summer lifeguard at Sunlight Pool. He attended the University of Cincinnati, where he earned his bachelor's degree and was a member of the UC Freshman Basketball team, playing alongside the legendary Oscar Robertson. Dale furthered his education at Xavier University, where he received his master's degree. Following in his parents' footsteps, Dale had a brief career in real estate with Coldwell Banker.

Dale's career as an educator and coach at Indian Hill High School left a lasting impact on countless young lives as the head coach for both the boys' track and basketball teams. Dale's contributions to the world of sports were recognized when he was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, honoring his achievements both as an athlete and a coach. He was also enshrined in the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, having guided his varsity basketball teams to over 100 victories. An avid University of Kentucky athletics fan, Dale also contributed his coaching talents to the UK summer basketball camp, as well as Ohio State's, sharing his knowledge and love for the game with the next generation of players.

His faith was an integral part of his life, and he was an active member of Sycamore Presbyterian Church, often participating in group trips and travels with his church family.

In 1989, Dale found love again and married Evelyn McKibben (nee Gish). Together, they settled in Loveland, Ohio, where Dale continued to immerse himself in the activities that brought him joy.

Dale's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was known for his candid photography at gatherings with family and friends, capturing moments that would become cherished memories. He loved the adventure of travel, particularly to the Caribbean islands, and enjoyed the simple pleasures of recreational fishing and indulging in Graeter's Turtle Sundaes. A fixture in his neighborhood, Dale could be seen on his daily walks. He took great pride in his garden and flowers, nurturing them with the same care he gave to his relationships. Dale's love for the heat and warmth of the sun was matched only by his love for his extended family and his beloved pet cat, "Freebie," who preceded him in death.

Dale will be remembered as a social "butterfly" whose zest for life and ability to bring people together was truly remarkable. His legacy of joy, kindness, and community spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
