On June 15, 2017 Clifton Thurman Fleenor, Jr. of Easton, passed away at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Easton.
He was born in Woodway, VA on July 31, 1936, son of the late Clifton Thurman Fleenor and Eloise Hillman.
Cliff's family moved from the mountains of Virginia to Cincinnati when he was young. They later settled in nearby Loveland, Ohio where he attended high school and met his wife of 58 years. They were married on September 6, 1958. He attended the University of Cincinnati where he studied and played football on scholarship. He graduated from Wilmington College, with a B.S. in Chemistry. Cliff served in the U.S. Air Force and was called up from the Air Force Reserves during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a Research Chemist, with a long, distinguished career, and was named a Plastics Pioneer. The young family moved to Parkersburg, WV where he worked for Marbon (renamed Borg Warner Chemical) helping develop transparent and fire-retardant ABS plastic. Cliff was an avid sailor, whether on small lakes, Lake Erie, the Chesapeake Bay or the open ocean. Cliff was involved in model shipbuilding at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, St. Michaels. He was an accomplished painter, and taught watercolor painting privately and on Cunard line cruise ships. He and Harriett cruised all over the world for many years while he taught. He was an active member of the St. Andrew's Society, serving as chapter's President. A lifelong churchgoer, Cliff served as elder or deacon for many years in the United Presbyterian Church. He was a most recently a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church in Easton. Cliff devoted himself to spreading the word of God with the Gideons International.
As a child, Cliff's family called him Sunny for his cheerful disposition, which he carried throughout his days. He did right by all around him and looked out for others.
He is survived by his wife Harriett Fleenor (nee Siekman), his son Bryan Fleenor, San Francisco and daughter Leslie Downie, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, and their Spouses, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers; David, James, and William, all of Ohio. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura.
A funeral service will be held at St. Mark's Methodist Church, 100 Peach Blossom Road, Easton, MD on Friday, June 23 at 11:00 A.M, where friends may call from 10-11 AM. A reception will follow the service at the church.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 6 at Evergreen Cemetery, 234 Center St., Miamiville, OH 45147 with his family.
