Reid
Jan 5, 1935 — Aug 29, 2026
Carlyle Reid, born in Larne, Northern Ireland and resident of Loveland, Ohio USA passed away August 29, 2026. Lyle passed at the age of 91 peacefully at home. He was happy and healthy with no ailments, it was simply his time to go and he drifted off to sleep while holding the hand of his loving wife.
Beloved husband of 64 years to Gwlenys Reid. Devoted father of Amanda (Pat) Caton, Elizabeth (Eric) Mullett, Robert Reid, and Richard (Cami) Reid. Cherished grandfather of Andrew (Lindsay), William (Amelia), Robbie, Jack, Grace, Katie (John), Spence, William, Cami, London, and Taylor. Loving great-grandfather of Leo, Rosie, Bowan, and Esme. He was preceded in death by his caring brothers and sisters William, Mollie, Drew, Jeanie, Robert and Alfie.
Lyle graduated from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland with 1st Class Honors - International Combustion Engines with a BSC, ME degree in 1956. Then went on to work as a Mechanical Engineer working in the Aerospace industry at both Rolls Royce in Britain, and then General Electric Aerospace in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lyle received many professional and industry honors including: MI Mechanical Engineering (Britain); C. Eng. (Britain), 1970 ASME Gas Turbine Power Award, and author of multiple ASME & SAE papers. Lyle worked on the design of the Harrier Jet engine, enabling the world's first vertical take-off airplane.
In addition to his successful professional career, Lyle was also an accomplished musician playing the flute, piccolo and tin whistle. He started playing the flute at the early age of 10 years old in Larne, N. Ireland. Going on to marching in the annual Orangeman’s Parade in Chains Flute Band with his brother Alfie and nephew Billy. Lyle went on to play in the Derby Concert Orchestra, the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra, and multiple local bands throughout Cincinnati. Lyle also enjoyed accompanying his oldest son Robert, Lyle playing the tin whistle and Robert playing the bagpipes, in many Caledonian Society and family events. Lyle was active in bands up until he was age 85.
Lyle began life being born at home in Larne Northern Ireland to Caroline McMurtry Reid & William Brown Reid. Married his wife Gwlenys in 1962 in Grantham, Lincolnshire England. One of the family's favorite stories is when Lyle, while attending a bullfight on the first day of his honeymoon in Barcelona Spain, was the only volunteer to go into ring to bullfight. He had read many Hemmingway books about bullfighting and figured he knew what to do. The experienced bull didn’t care how much Lyle had read about bullfighting and almost immediately gored him on an early pass through the red cape hurling him over the bull’s back. The other bullfighters then carried him out of the ring on their shoulders directly into the infirmary…what a great way to start your honeymoon!
Lyle was a devoted family man and his most cherished moments were spending time with his family. Lyle and Gwlenys went on to have two daughters , Amanda and Elizabeth, in England before taking a two year overseas assignment in Seattle Washington, USA in 1969 where their third child Robert was born. Then returned to England in 1972 where they had their last child Richard. The family emigrated from Derby, England to Cincinnati, Ohio USA in 1979 where Lyle went to work as an Aeronautical Engineer for General Electric. The family soon became accustomed to life in the United States, where they all still reside.
In remembrance, a poem by his wife Gwlenys…
'WALKING ON AHEAD'
When you feel a glow of warmth
And a smile deep in your heart
And you feel a deep contentment
’Cause he said you’d never part
When he fills your heart with song
With everything you do
And you hear a soft, sweet whisper
Then you know he’s still with you
When you look at all his children
You see that he lives on
They’re walking in his footsteps
So you know that he’s not gone
Oh they’re walking in his footsteps
On a path so carefully tread
A legacy of kindness
He’s just walking on ahead
Sometimes in twilight’s stillness
You feel his presence there
For his grace and hope and goodness
Live on for us to share
And while this world’s still turning
And each spring bursts forth anew
While there’s joy and life and laughter
His love lives on for you
