IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bill W.
Mcmillen
July 3, 1929 – September 4, 2023
William W. "Bill" McMillen of Greenhills, OH, passed away September 4, 2023, at the age of 94. Beloved husband for almost 67 years to the late Audrey S. McMillen (nee Seifert). Cherished father of William D. "Bill" (Teresa) McMillen and Sharon "Sherry" McMillen. Devoted grandfather of Jennifer (Kurt) Gaertner, Suzanne (Thor) Waller, and Christine (Dave) Hawks. Proud great-grandfather of Jameson and Findlay Gaertner, Ronan and Tristan Waller, and Terra Hawks. Loving brother-in-law of Sheila Seifert and the late David Seifert. Caring uncle to Robin Seifert LaPrete and Andrew Seifert.
Bill lived a full 94 years. He grew up in Detroit and was a lifelong U of M Wolverine fan. He came to Cincinnati to attend high school at the Ohio Military Institute. While there, a buddy invited him to go to a party, where, at the age of 15, he met the love of his life, Audrey. They continued dating while he attended Miami University and received his bachelor's degree. The wedding was set for November of 1952 after he completed basic training and leadership school at Camp Gordon in Georgia and OCS (Officer Candidate School) at Fort Riley, Kansas, but before he had to report to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. His orders came in and he had to leave his new bride for Germany. He returned in December of 1953 to start life as a family man. Bill and Audrey raised two children and moved to Greenhills in 1965. He was still living in the same house over 58 years later. Bill sold life insurance (he earned his CLU) while Audrey was with the kids and worked at Shillito's. Bill and Audrey loved to travel. Over the years, they visited all 50 states and most of the Canadian provinces, as well as England and Mexico.
Bill was far from idle in his retirement. He started out teaching a required course for agents to be licensed to sell insurance. Bill and Audrey volunteered at Beechwood Elementary School, at first helping out in the lunchroom, then continued mentoring in a first-grade class and then a second-grade class. They received a Friend of Education Award from The Southwestern Ohio Education Association. They also ran a junior achievement program in the elementary school. He delivered Meals on Wheels well into his eighties. Bill had the privilege to go on an Honor Flight in May 2019.
Bill was very active in his church. He served many terms as a deacon, and currently was a part of the Bible study group, a greeter, and an elder. Bill was very active in his Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He was a charter member and was President of House Corporation when their first house was constructed. He was there again in 2005 when the chapter was re-chartered. At the chapter's 50th year celebration, he was listed as one of 6 members on the Honor Roll. He enjoyed going to Oxford for chapter events and was invited to give the invocation twice. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Zeta-Upsilon Zeta chapter.
Bill's passion was service through his Kiwanis club. He joined Kiwanis in 1995 and became active in the Greenhills-Forest Park club. He was elected club president for the 2000/2001 Kiwanis year and again for the 2011/2012 year. For the 2004/2005 term, Bill was elected Lieutenant Governor for the 6th division of the Ohio district. He won an award for recruiting the most new members, and he could often be seen wearing his "Ask me about Kiwanis" button. Bill was recognized by having his name inscribed on the Kiwanis International Tablet of Honor for distinguished service.
Above all else, Bill loved his family. He loved his wife, Audrey, fiercely and cared for her without ceasing. He loved and was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and he basked in the smiles and laughter of his great grandchildren. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all.
Friends and family will be received 5 - 7 PM Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home, 129 N Riverside Ave, Loveland, OH, as well as 10 AM Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Northminster Church, 703 Compton Rd, Cincinnati, OH, with service at 11 AM.
