Obituary

"Music is a salve for the soul." I am grateful for all of the music Gus introduced me to, it connected us, filled our homes, and our hearts over the years.

Born in Cincinnati during a blizzard on March 8, 1957, Gus Thierry passed away suddenly on January 24, 2026, at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, also during a heavy snowstorm. He was 68 years old. Gus leaves behind the love of his life, Rose Anna Poggioli. Preceded in death were his parents, Nelly (Hannon) Thierry, who he adored, and Paul A. Thierry, a man he respected. Sisters Anita Allen and Lisa Geracioti will miss their brother's visits, his bear hugs, and lengthy phone calls, they were all very close. Gus's 3 nieces, Adrienne (Trevor) Cain, Eden (Zack) Pelzl, and Laura Geracioti, will remember their uncle as the slowest eater at the table. Two youngest grand nieces, Evvie and Mia, will remember him through pictures. Gus came to love Ro's family, her daughters Jené (Charlie) Grandmont, Katie (Gurpal) Dosangh, and son TJ Mulligan. Referring to himself "Grampa Sorta" he treasured the time he spent with the grands, Charlie, Angelo, Emeline, Selena (the only one who could get away with calling him Grampa Gussie!) and Julia. His extended Thierry and Hannon families are in disbelief at the loss of their nephew and cousin.

Gus was a master craftsman perfecting the art of historic restoration throughout Cincinnati. His artistic creativity and skills as a craftsman can be found in private homes and many Cincinnati landmarks. As a member of Cincinnati Preservation Association, Gus's company, ICS, was a recipient of Best of the City by Cincinnati Magazine.

Gus was a drummer extraordinaire who loved performing. Music was his world; it lifted him spiritually. Gus always said, "playing the drum is like listening to your heartbeat." As a versatile musician proficient in jazz, bluegrass, and rock and roll, he was comfortable in all genres. Playing gigs with friends brought him endless joy, he got to do that for 50 years! Direct quote from Gus, "the first rule of drumming: if you make a mistake, turn and look angrily at the bass player."

With travel plans underway and side jobs to complete, Gus's life ended much too soon. Losing Gus is heartbreaking, yet I feel grateful for the eternal love we share, the travel adventures, the many roadtrips visiting family, and all of the beautiful music!

Gus was passionate about supporting young, aspiring musicians. In lieu of flowers, our family asks that donations be made to Play It Forward, https://pifcincy.org/about-pif or to Cincinnati's Free Store Food Bank, https://freestorefoodbank.org/

Come Spring, we will celebrate the rich life Gus led. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 5-8 PM at Ludlow Garage, 342 Ludlow Ave.,Clifton, the center of the universe! Green burial will take place at Heritage Acres, Cincinnati, Ohio for immediate family.
