Obituary

Annaree Potter Benhase was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 3, 1930, to Ivan Potter and Magdelene Fehl Potter. Annaree grew up in Newtown and always shared dramatic stories of being rescued from the top floor of their house during the 1937 flood. The family then moved to Mariemont, where she graduated from high school in 1948. She attended Miami University, where her brother Jim introduced her to Carl "Benny" Benhase. They were married at the Mariemont Community Church on April 12, 1952, just before Benny was deployed to Korea. After the war, he began his teaching and coaching career, first in Panama City, Florida and then in Marion, Virginia, where their first child, Carla Bernice, was born. Soon after, they moved to Berne Union, Ohio where their second child, Scott Anson, was born. Annaree stayed at home with her children and supported Benny in his career as the family moved to Circleville, Ohio; Hanover College, Indiana; Portsmouth, Ohio; and then to Loveland, Ohio. When her children were in high school, she returned to full-time employment as a rural letter carrier for the USPS, a job she loved. Upon their retirement, she and Benny enjoyed nearly 20 years splitting their time between Winter Haven, Florida and Loveland. When health concerns necessitated, she and Benny moved back permanently to Loveland. Throughout her life she was active in church and community service. She was a member of the Loveland Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon; the Loveland Historical Society; avid member of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution); and PEO. She and Benny also volunteered together for the American Red Cross. Annaree was called "Nanny" by her loving grandchildren and their friends. She had a compassionate heart, a keen sense of fairness, and a sharp wit. She was a supportive friend to people of all ages. Annaree is survived by her husband of 64 years, Carl "Benny" Benhase; a daughter, Carla Dedden of Loveland, Ohio; a son, Scott Benhase of Savannah, Georgia, and his wife Kelly; a nephew, Mark Potter of Houston, Texas; and five grandchildren (and one great-grand child): Eric Dedden of Milford, his wife, Erin, and their daughter, Isabelle; John Benhase of Atlanta, Georgia; Rebekah Dedden of Loveland, Ohio; Charles Benhase of Washington, DC; and, Mary Grace Benhase, of Hong Kong. Annaree's younger brother, Ivan James (Jim) Potter, died on March 9, 2003. A memorial service will be held at Loveland Presbyterian Church (360 Robin Ave, Loveland, Ohio, 45140) on Wednesday, June 29 at 7 p.m. The private burial will be the next day at Hopewell Cemetery in Montgomery. The family asks that memorial gifts be given to the Loveland Presbyterian Church.
