IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alexander
Hencheck, Sr.
October 29, 1929 – January 24, 2024
Alexander Hencheck, Sr., of Loveland, Ohio ascended to Heaven on January 24, 2024 at the age of 94 in the company of his loving wife of 73 years, Lorraine (nee VanDriesen) and his family.
Al was born at home in Carbondale, Pennsylvania to Joseph G. Hencheck and Mary (nee Stefanides) Hencheck, on October 29, 1929. That day, known historically as Black Tuesday, marks the day attributed to the start of the Great Depression. Throughout his life he jokingly proclaimed he was the cause of that great depression as the country just didn't know how to react to his arrival. As the youngest of four, Al survived his deceased siblings and their spouses, Joseph (Dorothy), Steve (Mary), and Margaret (Matthew) Banko.
In 1950, Al married the love of his life, Lorraine. They had six children: Al, Jr. (Barb); Joe, (Natalie Feltner, deceased, 2023); Duane Vincent, (deceased, 1991); Mike, (Beth); Betsy Hoppe, (Eric); and Jean Simms, (Rob). His loving grandchildren include Melanie (Ryan) Dial, Ben (Melania) Hencheck, Sam Hencheck, Abigail (Lucas Swart) Hencheck, Adam Hoppe, Sarah Hoppe, Vince Belperio, Brianna Belperio, Erica Simms, Nichole Simms, and Chazmon Thornton and five great grandchildren; Aiden, Evan, Oliver, Simon, and Matilda.
Al leaves behind many adoring nieces and nephews in the Hencheck, VanDriesen, Banko, Marion, Becker, O'Malley, Olenick families., as well as beloved in-laws, Betty Becker (Jerry, deceased), and Jerry VanDriesen (Louise, deceased) and Patty VanDriesen (David Olenick). Al loved his entire family deeply was always there to care for and support his family and extended family in any way needed.
Al graduated from Fell High School in Carbondale in 1947 and started work for the Carbondale Toy & Novelty Mfg. Co., quickly becoming a foreman which prepared him well for his next and last job. He enjoyed a 37-year career at General Electric Aircraft Engines, rising to the level of section manager before retiring in 1989. During his time at GE, he and Lorraine enjoyed assignments in Johnson City, NY, residing in Binghamton; Everett, MA, residing in Burlington; and finally, in Evendale, Ohio from 1965 on while residing in Kenwood, Mason, and Loveland through the years.
Al was honored to be appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation of Kansas, Inc., in Wichita, Kansas.
Al and Lorraine were faithful servants of the Lord and very committed to their Catholic faith and St. Columban Church in Loveland. In addition to serving on the Parish Council and being active in many committees, clubs, and groups such as the Dancing Sippers and Prime Timers, friends might recognize them best for their years manning the "Split the Pot" booth at the annual church festival. Al was proud to have headed up the fund-raising efforts for the construction of not one but two new churches for St. Columban and had the honor of presenting the keys to Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk upon completion and dedication in 2009. Al especially enjoyed his traditional, monthly "Lunch with the Padres" over many years.
Al and Lorraine made many friends though work and church throughout their 73+ years together and enjoyed traveling the world where they made even more friends. Some of their favorite destinations included Brazil, New Zealand, Turkey, and their train trip across Canada in addition to many more countries too numerous to mention.
The family wishes to express many thanks and deep appreciation to daughter Jean and her husband Rob Simms, and their daughter Erica for opening their home to Dad and Mom and providing unmatched, loving care and support during the past six years. Also thank you to the skill and care of Hospice of Cincinnati and Shawan Dawson with the Keys.
In his last act of giving, Al was pleased to donate his body to the University of Cincinnati.
A Mass of Celebration will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 11 AM where friends and family will be received from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM. A luncheon will be held immediately following the Mass at the church.
If you are so inclined, please direct donations in Al's name to:
